I'm canceling my VentureX this year because I got it only because they didn't limit authorized users and AUs got lounge access, and that was immediately changed after I got the card. We use the Chases all the time and I've learned that system pretty well, plus we go to a lot of Hyatts so the partner system works for us.

Curious how much you spend per month across the cards to get the free travel? And is it worth paying the annual fee on these?

I fund the United Travel Bank (now have to find something else), I take biannual staycation girl nights with my daughter at either Hyatt or Salamander in DC (the only hotels with indoor pools), I use Uber credits for monthly takeout, I use streaming credits, I use Walmart + for delivery. Use Lululemon for odd gifts.

You can dip your toes if you want by getting a Platinum in mid-December. Benefits reset every calendar year so you can triple dip and then cancel mid-January 13 months later.

But with the Gold Card, even if you spend $15,000 on groceries, wouldn’t you only net $275 after the annual fee vs $300 from using a no-fee Wells Fargo card with 2% cash back? Or do you value the Amex more highly than that?

$15k in groceries is 60k points, which is one roundtrip economy trip to Europe, at a minimum, and two round trips if you’re lucky. This beats cash back. But you have to value travel to see it this way.

NP. How does 60,000 points get you 2 RT tickets? I'm sitting on 130k points with Chase.

Currently Air France sells economy tickets to Paris for 19k points. There is a 20% transfer bonus in effect so it’s about 16k after that. So it’s 64k for two RT. You can buy the few points you’re lacking.

Or you can take a cheap flight to Cartagena with Avianca and stay in a beautiful oceanfront Hyatt. You have enough for a long weekend. Get club access to cover breakfast and happy hour snacks.

Every airline has its own rules but it’s typically at least 24 months. My suggestion to you is to transfer only when you have your itinerary in mind and you have confirmed the tickets for your dates are available. Don’t transfer for “some time in the future”. Hotel points last longer as I recall.

Don’t use Chase portal. Never use any credit card portals for flights. Check with the airline directly.

At present May 24 thru June 1 are priced at 18,750 miles through Air France.

Later in June, June 3, 4, 7, 8, 16 and 21 are also available at the same rate.

Don’t use Chase portal. Never use any credit card portals for flights. Check with the airline directly.

Thank you! I also see a $144 or $134 along with the miles - so does that mean the cheapest one way is 18750 miles (or $187) + $134? So I end up paying the equivalent of $642.
