| He was talking negativity about Texas and the people who live there, not your son. Austin is one of the very few areas where normalcy thrives. Explain to him that red states are responsible for our current president and hearing the word Texas can bring out irrational rage on people. It’s not personal. |

When I lived in Austin (for 10 years), I knew only a small handful of conservative people. Houston was similar (actual Houston. Don’t come at me, Kingwood/Clear Lake/etc people). The major urban centers are blue. |

+1 and this post is so similar (including friends who have drifted apart) that it makes me wonder whether the post is real or not. It’s also written quite strangely, part of it sounds like he’s already committed and part sounds like it’s just an option he’s considering. Lot of trolls around here right now—the “my kid chose another school over Emory and I can’t deal with it” threads all got deleted yesterday, for example. Assuming that it is real, I don’t think all of the “kid is a jerk, shut him down, blah blah” advice is actually good. Texas gave itself its own reputation, and eagerly so, and that’s not a reputation many people view favorably. It won’t be the last time your kid hears a comment like this so it’s better you ensure your kid understands the context and that it isn’t personal to him. |

Remind your kid of what an appropriate response to hearing where someone is going to college might be: “So exciting!” —“Congratulations!” —“The football games are going to be so fun!” —“The music scene in Austin is amazing!” |

People say mean, judgy things about every college. I went to UVA, and people would say I was going to turn into a snob.
I also hate the people who call all the local schools “13th grade” or “high school 2.0”. Obnoxious. People are mistaken about a lot of things. |

I think some of the pushback is because the confusion over how you are referring to the University.
Most people just say UT or a university of Texas because it’s the flagship campus. Just like no one says Univ of CA Berkeley. It is just Cal or Berkeley. So at first I thought you meant the University of Austin crazy conservative college that was founded a few years ago. It is a given if you say UT or a University of Texas it is Austin.
