Really? Let’s start with the simplest one. Why is a “psychiatrist” “iffy”? |
|
Yes
The first two years of dental and medical school sre the same. They take the same classes all grouped together. They learn the same pharmacology, take the same anatomy and physiology including cadaver dissection. They can diagnose. They can prescribe. They are CPR/BLS certified. They have to be as a person can have a major medical event in the dental chair. They do a residency after dental schoolm I dated a guy while he was in dental school. It is four years and he was super smart, but it was still very difficult. He did a residency in a hospital before becoming a general dentist. Sure, their specialty is teeth, but that doesn't make them particularly different than, say, a Dermatologist, Opthalmologist, ENT. FWIW, I am an RN and work in a hospital, but in an admin office setting. I haven't touched a patient in 8 years and my BLS certification is out of date. If someone asks for a medical provider to address an emergency on an airplane, I am going to hope the dentist steps up instead of me. |
You are flaunting your ignorance. The first two years of medical and dental school are the same. Dentists must complete residencies and are able to prescribe without supervision. Dentists might not be physicians but they are doctors. The JD analogy is completely irrelevant. |
| I would take a dentist over me, a social science PhD. |
Psychiatrists are medical doctors. They have to graduate from medical school and complete a residency. |
Oral surgeons get their MD by taking 2 years of medical school classes during residency. They don’t earn admission to a medical school. That’s an unusual situation and I don’t consider it equivalent to any other surgical speciality. |

I hope all the people so happy to call dentists doctors have a lot of respect for chiropractors. At least chiropractors can order labs and prescribe medications and deliver babies.
And lol at the poster earlier in the thread mixing up oral surgeon with dentist. They are night and day. Oral surgeons are actually doctors. |
| She’s a doctor in terms of title. Her specialty is teeth. So she might not be the right specialty for, say, a broken bone. … Although basic first aid and CPR is foundational for most medical professions. You are conflating the two issues, OP. |
| Yes, dentists are doctors. |
| I refer to dentists as Dr. when addressing them. I think that's appropriate. |
A dentist can prescribe and order labs. What are you even talking about? People have specialities. Your dermatologist is a doctor but she hasn't had as much recent child-delivering training as the average fireman. So what? |

Jill Biden.
Doctor? |
Hegseth. DEI hire? |
So no? Mine was a valid question. |
NP. Is Jill Biden a dentist? |
