In so many ways it is 2020 again. Schools are not closed this time |
Conveniently leading into the treasury building (where many young folks spent nights during doge several months ago) from the former East wing aka ballroom |
| What's the closest to a coup in USA? Was it Jan 6? |
But your tax bracket will be lower in 2025… so? |
Same - I thought there would be Feds driving uber, etc. but the airport was packed with lots of people waiting a long time for rides. |

The effect on my (large, government contracting company) is that our revenue is way down, we've got internal employees on mandatory 32-hour work weeks with the rest either eating into their PTO or leave-without-pay. We have completely furloughed some staff. We've been told bonus pools will be small for 2025. Most of us are still working, but our invoices will not be paid so my company will be tight on cash.
I don't see any reason for either side to compromise right now. And the more Congress cedes its power to the Executive Branch, the more likely it is that our democracy degrades. I don't know the answer--it's bad. |
Trump is going balls to the walls on the shutdown and will hold out until the Democrats concede. He does not care how it affects people or his presidency. I am not a fed but if were I would be looking for a job anywhere in the US or overseas if that suits your family. |
| Half of the births in the United States are paid for by Medicaid. Hospitals are going to cut back on what those women receive. Guessing midwife births with minimal anesthetics and no heroic efforts to save babies and move them to expensive NICU treatment. |
| Where should Americans be looking for jobs overseas before orange sells everything for his benefit to vodka Pouty and oil shieks ? |
It's all so predictable and tiresome. In the end, the politicians always come out ahead, with raises and more money into their pork and slush funds, and the people have to pay more taxes. Government exists for itself. |
| I’m a fed contractor who won’t be getting back pay. I’m angry because I cannot max out my 401k now, since I’m not getting paid. |
+1. There's a lot of wealth in this area, some will be untouched by the shutdown and some will feel it but at a distance or next year. No Rivians in my federal lot either, and my family doesn't shop at Tysons even when we're getting paid. But we are tightening up where we do spend: canceled subscriptions, pulled back charitable donations, postponing repairs and tree trimming, skipping events that require admission tickets or purchases (like apple picking or fairs). Other than the subscriptions, it's mostly local spending. |
Aren't you a peach? People all across this country are hurting. Sales are down in all sectors. Inflation is rising so is unemployment and the National Debt is cruising faster than ever but you go on and be the dummy you are. |

I’ve canceled almost all of my monthly recurring memberships- yoga, fresh dog food (def a luxury), and skipping my monthly hair appointment. No eating out for myself or kids, and I’ve planned for a lot of low-cost, high yield meals (chili, soup, spaghetti, etc.).
Had to make the heartbreaking decision to pause my teenage son’s weekly therapy appointment- copay is $50 each appointment. Also looking into ditching cell phone plan for pay-as-you-go. |
