What was it like visiting birthplace of your ancestors?

We lived in St. Mary’s County for a few years when I was a kid. No matter where I am down there or on the eastern shore, I feel at home.

History is alive schools still have field trips to St Mary's

Sometimes there is news of people buying cheap properties in other countries (think Italy or Costa Rica). Doesn't appear they are from that area but they plan to move there. What about the places from where your family moved/fled from: how was it visiting?

The first time I visited the estate in VA where some of my ancestors were enslaved, the experience was an emotional rollercoaster. I’ve been back two more times and am better able to process the tour of the grounds and the work of the archaeologists and historians who have tried to document my ancestors’ experience.

She may have had a reason to leave, you may not enjoy it as much as you think

She met someone who moved to the US, but left her entire family behind for this at the expense of her family. It was a choice but her family is so lovely and I want to spend more time with them. Honestly it is her loss.

You don't know what we think understand or that we agree with your loaded set of statements.

No, my dear, I think most people on DCUM who are educated and follow the news understand occupation and apartheid. Nothing loaded about that!

More projection. Your passion and fervor and Iran-sponsored propaganda campaign do not define truth.

I felt nothing. I get that culture is important but I think too much attachment to genetics is problematic.

Small town in Italy. My family has always had dark hair and silver gray eyes. Very rarely do you find anyone else that has that combo. When we went to the little town, it was everyone. It was a special experience.

After a long administrative nightmare, my parents finally won their asylum claim about 10 years ago.

It opened the door for them to visit extended family and friends back in El Salvador, and for me to finally meet all the people I’d only known through video calls and emails up to that point. It was wonderful for everyone to reconnect!

I'm not Ghanaian but when I visited the slave forts in Accra, I had this powerful Sankofa-like time travel experience. It was extremely humbling and connected.

I think the impact of WWI gets a lot clearer when you go around the UK. My granddad was from a tiny Scottish town and they have a WWI memorial nearby and even out in the middle of nowhere there were a ton of names on it. It seems like a whole generation was decimated.

If you were American Indian you’d know it either by your CDIB or your tribal card.

Not everyone has one if you don't live there

also a lot of tribes were "de federalized" by force in both the 1950s and aggressively through the Reagan era in an attempt to have access to tribal lands and also assimilate the Native American populations.
