Thirty-five years before Vice President Kamala Harris named Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, he was on his way to teach high school in mainland China as a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square took place in 1989.

After Walz returned to Nebraska following his year teaching abroad, he told the Star-Herald that if Chinese citizens "had the proper leadership, there are no limits on what they could accomplish."

As of 2016, Walz had visited China about 30 times, including for his honeymoon.

Walz has met with the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled leader, and has been critical of China's aggression in the South China Sea.

In a 2016 interview, Walz said he didn't "fall into the category that China necessarily needs to be an adversarial relationship," and said there could be "many areas of cooperation" between the U.S. and China. But he also said the relationship depends on China playing "by the rules."

That same year, Walz said China's human rights record was "getting worse, not better." He suggested that separating China's human rights record from trade policies, which he previously supported, was a mistake.

Sounds pretty critical of china but leaves an opening for a relationship better than the one that exists today.

Nice contrast with Trump who praised the violent crackdown on protesters at Tiananmen Square.

He can talk about lowering drug prices, providing money to increase the supply of housing and going after companies that price-gouge. I am not sure why Harris didn't answer with that in the other debate.

Ignoring China won't make the whole country go away. Chinese people benefit from exposure to outside culture.

He wasn't having secret conversations with a dictator in the dictator's capital on US Independence Day on July 4, like the Republicanans in Congress.

He went to China to reach in the summer after Tianenman, and no one disputes that.

The only disagreement was exactly how close to Tianenman he was in May.

I hope the debate moderator asks him because it's a such a simple layup to clarify a tiny bit of wording from 10 years ago, compared to Vance who invented an insane story about EATING CATS just a few weeks ago.

Republicans and "Independents" think that one side being not 100% literally the devil and one side being not literally 100% God on High means both sides are the same.
