Chappelle Roan concert meltdowns

So our family has enjoyed Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess for a year, and we were really excited when Chappell blew up the way she has. She is exceptionally talented and entertaining.

I’m disappointed that she canceled, but I’m not surprised. I honestly expected it given recent events. Still going to ATG - too expensive a ticket to bail entirely. But I wouldn’t have gotten the tickets at all. I do respect her need to step back. But it should be a step back from everything, not this selective “this concert but not that one.”

Ah my daughter loved(s) PPC too! She's both of our favorite singers we discovered on tiktok. It's insane how much she's blown up! I do worry about her.

A few years? Probably by the end of 2024 or early 2025. She doesn’t seem well at all now.

She has already said that she is bi-polar.

Anonymous wrote:The reason she canceled this weekend is because she’s getting a ton of backlash online for two things she did this week. First, she came out and said she’s not gonna be pressured into endorsing a political candidate because there’s issues with both sides. This really pissed people off because she claims to be such an avid LGBTQ + advocate, particularly an advocate of trans people . She’s openly gay herself. So no matter your beliefs there’s obviously one party who fights for those rights as opposed to the other party. So it left her fans really confused about her message. Then, she ranted on social media saying of course she’s going to vote for Kamala, while mispronouncing her name, but saying she was just asking people to use critical thinking skills when choosing a candidate. She went on and on for about 10 minutes about how people need to use their critical thinking skills speaking pretty condescendingly to her fans.

I love her music but as a person she’s not very likable. I don’t care who she votes for, she should’ve just kept it to herself like she wanted to, but it’s more her attitude toward her fans that is so offputting.

I don’t understand why dumb videos on social media are a reason to cancel your concerts. No one would care - everyone wanted to go to her show.

I’m telling you folks - she’s a big ol’ phony. She concocted some dumb “controversy” to try to weasel out of a low paying weekend gig she agreed to a year ago when she was still playing 1000 seat theaters. She somehow managed to play other recent events. And I bet she plays ACL next weekend where she’s getting PAID big money. She already told everyone Chappelle Roan is a “character.” All of this is inauthentic and tbh I’m starting to doubt if the drag and pro-LBGTQ thing is just facade and money grab.

I suspect this, too. And she wouldn’t be the only one—there’s a lot money in it. I remember reading an article about her before she got huge (my teen DD is a big fan)—as I recall her career wasn’t going anywhere for years, then she went though a painful breakup with a boyfriend, reinvented herself as LGBT and became an overnight sensation.

Maybe- who cares? Why does that even matter?

Do you think Beyoncé and Taylor’s costumes are real? No one runs around in bejeweled ice skating costumes.

NP. This is the most bizarre "comeback." Beyonce and Taylor Swift are indeed, real people. Chappell Roan's stage persona is a character, as the PPP correctly stated.

Bizarre is expecting someone who dresses in drag to be real. The entire point is to hide her real identity, so why expect the made up identity to be real as the PP said. Taylor and Beyoncé are real, but they are constantly dressing like they are in a burlesque or Disney on ice show. Somehow the PP can accept and understand they are costumes. EVEN THOUGH Taylor blurs her professional and personal life so you can’t tell what is real and what is performative.

In drag that line is much more pronounced. You put on the drag costume, assume a different name and you are fake. Even a 5 year old can get it. I’m unsure why that is incomprehensible to the PP. why say “I think the whole thing is fake?” Throwing shade at a drag queen when she is clearly fake.

If dressing in drag and having a drag persona is a money grab, why is that a problem? Creating variants of songs and having flash sales is a money grab too, and done by the billionaires.

Fame sucks because fandom sucks.

+1. Feel so bad for the kids who saved up to buy tickets to this weekend’s show. They aren’t getting any money back even though she just bailed at the last minute.

So wait. You think chapelle roan should just suck it up and do her concert rather than deal with her mental health or safety issues, but you don’t think the kids should have to deal with a concert being cancelled because that is too hard on them?

I don’t really get the logic- crap happens.

That said, I really love chappelles songs. I find her fun and love her vocal range and think she has an interesting take on things. She is a little too explicit for me, but I couldn’t care less about who she is endorsing or not endorsing. I’m not 10 and I know that voting is something everyone in a democracy should do. It is what adults do.

Fandom is insane.

She bailed on her commitment. They didn’t. She should reimburse them for a portion of the ticket price.

Not even remotely the same. Have you watched the Simone Biles special on Netflix? If Simone had remained in the Olympics that year, it was a safety hazard. Simone recognized the risk and took herself out of a physically unsafe situation, got the help, did the work. She missed one Olympics. Chapel has canceled five or six events this year some of which were for other larger events. If she’s struggling, she needs to go out and cancel the rest of the year instead of the way she is handling it now. Simone did not enter into any events until she knew. She was really ready. Taylor disappeared for a couple years during the situation, she wasn’t scheduling events and randomly canceling them, she handled what was going on with herself behind the scenes.

Absolutely. Taylor is such a professional. That's why her star has risen so high and stayed there.

The fame life may not be for Chappell. You can't start cancelling concerts until later in your career.
I was really excited about seeing Chappell Roan tomorrow in Columbia.

DP here, Taylor went through a period of deep depression after the Kanye/kim recorded phone call/media backlash and she stayed out of the spotlight completely. She did not book shows, she did not rant on social media, etc. She stayed away, eventually worked through it and came back when she was ready. I just mentioned this because everyone goes through something, it’s how you handle it as what matters. If you haven’t watched Miss Americana, Taylor touches on all of this. It definitely humanized her and give a perspective that I think many don’t know about.

And? Why is that suddenly an issue? There seems to be a lot more going on.

It’s like she thinks she is Morrisey or something.

Agree if you are struggle with mental health, that’s valid. But you cancel the entire tour to get well. Doing it piecemeal looks like you’re reneging on contracts to enrich yourself at your fan’s expense. Not a good look at all. And not sustainable.

Let’s remember that she didn’t cancel those European shows for her mental health, she canceled it because she prioritized the VMAs, an award show!

I’m all-in for her desire to protect her privacy and her mental health. I think people need to leave Kayleigh alone; she’s clearly struggling. If Kayleigh needs to cancel some Chappell appearances, so be it. But I agree that means a bigger step back, not this piecemeal approach. This does nothing to fix the root problem if she just plays another venue next week.

This totally made me think of the concert tickets I bought for Morrissey back in high school! I bought them for the whole crew and then had to refund them when he cancelled.
