AP Tests this week, how are we feeling?

Given past experience, that doesn't mean ALL results will be available first thing on July 8th.

I have kids taking a few starting this week. One kid is really ill with Flu B so has anti-virals and anything else we can pump him with, to be well enough to take them.

There are make-up days at the end of the exam period. Don’t take it sick

100% You want your kid to be feeling good so they can do well AND not getting everyone else sick in the process.

It matters if the college allows the kid to skip an intro class if they get a good score on the exam. My senior cancelled all his AP exams except those.

My kid gets an F in the class if they don’t take the AP test. Your school lets them skip the actual AP test?

In FCPS you don't have to take the AP exam. BUT we have finals whether you take the AP Exam or not. At least in my kids' FCPS HS. So you have either (1) AP Exam and a final or (2) just the final and there is no penalty.

+1 My kid is marginally keyed up, but makes no difference to me.

Aren't you guys cool! Keep up the good work surveying DCUM non-stop and invalidating people's feelings!

I’m sorry, is this thread only for anxious helicopter parents? OP asked a question right in the title and I answered it honestly.

Don’t take it personally. These helicopter parents strike back hard and fast. It’s in their DNA.

What?? It's the haters who respond with record speed.

NP. Agreed. Talk about projection.

Caring about your child's well being and having feels of concern for your child as they go through various things is not being a helicopter parent. If you were overseeing their studying (beyond if they ASKED for some minor help) to some crazy degree, that's helicoptery. But just having feeling is bad for you people now?

Jeez.

We’re at a non-NOVA large public HS. Technically, the exams are “optional” but taking the AP Exam usually gets one exempted from the teacher’s final which, rumor has it, is invariably more difficult than the AP.

Our sophomore is taking first AP tomorrow. Has studied outside of class. Needs a 3+ to get the DE credit needed for their program. Luckily, there are alternatives if that doesn’t work out but that hasn’t changed the “stress” level.

Our school is similar— you take the AP or the teacher’s final. However, our school pays for the AP exam and needs to recommend you to take it. If they don’t recommend you, you can pay to take it. Not sure if a kid in this situation also has to take the final.

Our school also gives kids a preliminary final grade in June and adjusts it later to reflect their AP score.
Interesting.

I’m the AP-test-optional PP. Our kids’ grades are final and are not influenced by the AP score. One of the good things about DCUM is that it’s informative to know how different practices work (or don’t) in diffident locations. As we’re not in NOVA, I long ago learned it was best to not assume everyone just did it the same way. (And thank goodness, I say. Some DCUM-land policies, both public and private, are 😳 )

Sophomore is taking APUSH. She has been working so hard all year and her course has been so rigorous that I'm sure she'll do well, but she's studying.

Senior is taking Calc AB, Stats, Euro History. He's very chill (as always). If he gets 4s or 5 he gets college credit, but that's just a cushion since he doesn't intend to graduate early.

Sure. The first two posters on this thread answered honestly, and were met with a snarky “aren’t you guys so cool!” Please tell me who’s the hater.

Not worried. DD has 4 in a row and is a senior - Gov, Stats, Lit, and Psych. I've told her that I just want her to her best. We don't care about her getting college credit. Last year she had 4 also and had run her self ragged beforehand such that she fell asleep in the AP Latin exam. (no one tried to wake her up or anything.) She got a "1".

She didn't submit her scores when she applied to colleges but she had ACT scores that she submitted.

do the AP scores weight heavily on admissions?

I’m a mom who often proctors AP and IB exams at our HS. A suggestion to urge your kids to take an extra layer as the rooms are often cool. And send them with Kleenex. The number of kids who are sniffly and congested is amazing, and the Kleenex the school provides is see through sand paper.
I’m the mom trying to offer support and encouragement via a smile — hoping all the kids a good week!

No, they are typically not considered even at highly selective schools.

Their value is in placement and credit at public colleges.

Not feeling great—private school “Advanced Calc AB” did not prepare my student sufficiently for the AP AB test. They are studying in their own so we shall see…

PP here. They are required to take the AP test (or get an F) and they also have a required final exam that counts for 20% of the grade.

I feel fine because I don't have to take them.

They are REQUIRED for Oxford and Cambridge and most other top colleges outside of the US.

Let’s see how it goes.

You mean with the help of an expensive tutor? Same here.

My kid tried the expensive tutor thing one year and it was a waste. Kid did much better with self-study.

We used the "guaranteed 5" Princeton tutor. Kid got a 3 and we got 100% of the tuition money back immediately. If they'd got a "4" we'd have been paid back 25% of the fees. Shame about the 3 though, as that's worthless.
