Trust me, those "higher tier" frats are not places you want her! I may be an old curmudgeon but the amount of drug use I hear about in the greek system, especially those houses, would make you want her to stay far, far away. and I'm not talking about weed, which is everywhere.

UVA Greek system. I’m generally a fan and was Greek but it’s bad, really bad.

It’s only 26 percent participation (Wash and Lee is over 85 percent participation). Just don’t participate! Stop
Judging. My kid did UVA and never once stepped in a house. Your kid can make that choice, too

Under 10 percent of students are rushing right now as it is. UVa isn’t half the party school even Vanderbilt continues to be. Pretty lame in that regard.

Considering I chose a school deliberately with no Greek system, that's a-ok with me! My own kid is smart enough not to bother with rush at their school. Sorry yours isn't.

You're wrong, not everyone wants the top 3. My DD went in knowing she wouldn't fit with those girls and knew she'd be dropped, which she of course she was. She did say they were very nice and she was pleasantly surprised by them. But it is absolutely about wealth and connections in those sororities and at UVA those girls come from boarding schools in the Northeast. If you are not already known to them before rush, you're probably not getting in, even if you're a legacy.

UVA is slowly changing. While Greek life will be somewhat important, it won't be as important as it once was. UVA is getting kids from different backgrounds even out of state kids.

LOL. Just because UVA is trying to rewrite its extensive history, doesn't mean it is succeeding at doing so. Greek Life will always be synonymous with UVA.

Bitter? UVA is only 26% Greek. The vast majority of UVA kids don't even pledge. Mine didn't.

When I was at UVA, everyone knew which were the top houses, middle and bottom. The question is whether or not you cared about it. Lots of strivers and climbers, legacies, and girls from parts of the country where Greek life is big will be focused on getting into the best house.

There are still plenty of girls, however, who just want to make friends and meet people, take part in the activities and opportunities that sororities offer (sisterhood, leadership, philanthropy, intramurals, parties, etc) and these girls are usually able to find a house where they feel welcome and may be less focused on the rank.

I did not intend to join a sorority but gave it a shot and met a bunch of girls who I am still friends with 25 years later. We were not a top house but we had a lot of fun together (then and now!)

It’s weird that you are so dismissive of an activity that literally involves a quarter of the school. Can you name one other that has that much involvement?
