Best Small Colleges for Math

Haverford also a good choice.
Caltech is small if that is the kind of thing you were looking for.

Many schools also have small math programs even if the school isn’t small. Pitt is a great example. Your daughter sounds awesome! Good luck.

St. Olaf runs a semester in Matthmatics study abroad program in Budapest, open to anyone. So there is an opportunity to pick up a lot of upper level math courses even if her LAC does not offer them regularly. I don't know how these courses break down though, pure versus applied. My kid opted for a semester abroad elsewhere, where he could fill a science major requirement as well. He is taking an excellent dynamical systems course where he landed, so keep study abroad in mind as a way to expand options.

Our niece just graduated from there and had two offers for phd programs from Ivy League schools.

Smith grad here. Math major and PhD from top three university in my field. The math classes at Amherst were more difficult, though Smith faculty were much more supportive.

My DC was a math major at Amherst who came in with several post-AP courses, so he ended up taking math courses at UMass to fill out his major. I believe Smith students have that option too - a nice advantage of the college consortium.

NP-- I understand from what you wrote that UMAss has higher level courses than Amhearst and Smith. Did your DC ever consider just attending UMass outright rather than just take classes at UMass? I'm guessing that they wanted a "small college" but do they lose the advantage of being at a small college if they are actually taking classes at a large university?

Thanks for any insight!
