Magnet Functions

My function DS is spending less than 20 mins per night on his function homework. So far so good

My kid understands the concepts but needs a bit more time to finish without making any computational mistakes. Does anyone know the reason behind the emphasis on speed?

If the teacher (name) sounds like a Star Trek character or a German adjective, talk to him. He (either of these) will work with student and/or explain. Both are fantastic teachers and vested in students' learning.
If teacher (name) sounds like a flower, talking won't help, but talk to him, so you can then document issues for Mr. O.

Ah, Mr. Edelweiß

I can tell you the Mag Analyis at Blair is 3 semesters, at Poolesville it is 4. The schools are not the same, they are similar. Blair is the original and Poolesville is the copy. Blair is harder.

What is your evidence that Analysis is 3 semesters at Blair?

The catalog says 4

Did you mean Precalculus?

How long does/did it take for your kid? My DS was state mathcounts top 10 and Jmo qualifier last year. Still said he can learn new things in function class, which is like the first-ever experience in math class since K. His friends and math teammates said about the same experience. They are enjoying it so far.

Yes, meant Magnet Precal. It’s 3 semesters at Blair & 4 at Poolesville

I also think Poolesville does not offer Analysis II

You're exaggerating or your child is lying to you. The homework packets are anywhere from 15-20 multipart problems to around 40 shorter problems, and involve heavy computation. Even if your child was racing through it there's no way to do it in less than 20 minutes.

DP here. Not sure why you need to brag on this forum, and before you say you were just answering, you and I know full well that this was a highly unusual answer and a flex. If it actually is 20min, it is early days. Your highly prepped/enriched kid is probably reviewing. He also may be doing some of the work in other classes or embellishing to feed his tiger mom's ego/expectations.
For mine (coming in w/no math enrichment, just mcps math), it varied between 1-4 hours. The 4 was when they went down a wormhole on deep, complicated problems. This was at Blair 4 years ago. I think the class was more intense then than it is now, but not sure. The main teacher (S), who was always fantastic, became more sensitive to student mental health during covid. So, wondering if that had a lasting impact. Also, another teacher (K) taught 1 quarter back in my kid's day, and that was less intense, and I think he took over as the main teacher recently. So, older experiences may not be that accurate to now.

Absolutely. It’s just not possible in any way even if the kid is an unprecedented genius.

DP.

It's not clear that "20 minutes" PP is the same as "JMO" PP. But maybe it is.

1-4hrs PP, Did your kid come from Geometry or Algebra 2 in 8th?

Any kind souls willing and able to snap a photo of a page of Functions or Precalculus homework and upload it somewhere (http://imgbb.com anonymous upload) as an example illustration?

Since every kid is different, seeing an example would help prospective parents and students calibrate their expectations.

(No need to comment to say "No" . "No" is implied if you don't comment.)

Stop asking. No one is going to do this for you. Email the magnet coordinator if you need it.

A lot of this homework is graded. Are you asking parents to help your child cheat for next year?

I think the 1-4 hours is very representative of the classmates DC knows and all came from Alg. 2 or they did the equivalent in outside enrichment so if a child came from Geometry in MCPS that tells you nothing.
