So many essays !!! Wtf?

So we have the common app essay- great, but every college my kid is looking at requires from 2-4 different additional essays and none of them overlap that much.

Kids have AP courses, sports, work, etc. when the hell are they doing all of this?

Let’s face it, rich kids just pay to have their essays written for them or spoon-fed anyways. It should just be common app essay, GPA, test scores and 2 teacher recs.

I can see why there are so fewer males to females in college.

Ridiculous OP! Of course boys can write essays. Stop fighting with reality. Both that there are essays required if you want to attend a 4-year college. But also, that your kid isn’t that busy this summer. There are no AP courses over the summer. Even with a 40-hr week job, there are two full days a week to work in college applications.

Wow you're quite the victim. I know plenty of far from rich kids with AP courses, sports, work (part time during the school year & full time during the summer) who got it all done without complaint.

California State - no essays and 22 colleges applied to in one sitting.

There's a list of US colleges that do not require essays:

64 colleges

Quite a bad criterion to use though (in picking a college), wouldn’t you say??

I think it's a great criterion! Cuts out the BS and saves colleges a bunch of money to read made up stories written by someone else. What do you say?

Writing is an important skill in most professions. What school wants a kid who cannot be bothered writing a paragraph about the school?

Definitely write as many as possible over the summer. My DD also used all those random days off in the fall to write essays.

A lot of them are similar and can be tweaked to work for multiple colleges. The one about why the school is a good fit. The one about making a difference in your community. Some have unique essays, but many are similar.

Let's face it, you come off in a way I doubt you intend with your saying such a thing. You sound uneducated when you make statements like this.

Serious question, how many parents use the expression, “WTF?”

ummm, no one here did ...

Apply to fewer colleges if that’s an issue. Or better yet, only apply where the kid will actually go if accepted.

This was our strategy.

I.initially told my kid to apply to 10 schools, then he mapped out how many essays each school required abd added ip the application fees.

Applied to 3 schools, got accepted ED to.top choi ce.

Stop with the rich kid thing. It isn't true for 99.9% of kids. Why does it makes you feel better to create a scapegoat for a process every college applicant will go through?

yet people always say rich people buy SAT scores thus it's unfair

Test optional proponents freak out if you mention no essays

Because the majority of kids write their own essays. They may have guidance with brainstorming and editing, but most do not "pay someone to write the essay" .
Essays tell a lot more than some standardized test. It is the opportunity to tell the AO a bit more about yourself---whether it is true or not is up to the applicant. And yes for the ones that have 4+ supplementals, it does help weed out those that are not actually interested.

Omg. You people are so naive.

Our neighbor had two other neighbors currently at school of choice write his essay. Another dad told me he wrote his kids and paid someone to edit it. A few more told my kid they used chatGPT. Another used a much older sibling’s old essay.

Essays are the easiest of the 3 to cheat with: test scores zero opportunity almost and GPA is on your transcript.

Where do you live? Sounds l like a neighborhood full of sleazy families. I

I hate to hear that kids are being raised with these values.

It is really not universal.

52% of applicants lie about their ethnicity.

GPA & test scores- and 2 teacher recs. Blind to race and gender and $.

That’s how it should be done.

The more pretentious the school, the more essays and writing prompts.

Are colleges not trusting the English and humanities grades in HS and planning on using essays (that they can't even be sure the kid wrote) to assess their writing skills? Who's the bigger fool? The colleges that actually do this or the people that believe this to be a possibility?

More than 1/3 of applicants lie about being a racial minority. Most say Native American which is idiotic.
