How often do you think applicants lie about their race?

If there's a toss up between equals and a college realizes their students all are alike, then maybe on occasion given all other things equal someone might get a second look, but all things are equal so it's just the luck of teh draw at that point. Even lying about about race for a scholarship only puts you in the hunt, you're still competing against others on stats. Nobody gets a scholarship just because they are of a certain race, they simply might qualify for it. Even the most diverse colleges fall many percentages points under the representative average of most races, especially Black and Brown.

I worked a summer program during college and we had this exclusive summer program for incoming minority freshmen. The test scores they had were shocking. I mean like 1,000 on the SAT or 20 on the ACT low. This was a state flagship requiring more like a 1350+ or 30+ for most students to have a chance.

I would. It's not a game, and lying is unethical.

How could they ever even prove fraud? Close to impossible.

And if you can self-identify a gander, you can certainly self-identify with a race.

Spoken by someone who has never dealt with living as that race. Look, folks, don't lie. Don't act unethically to try to get ahead of someone else who likely has had more hurdles than you. Be honest.

What’s unethical is admitting people on the basis of race.

The admissions process is already clearly very chaotic. Colleges have chosen to make it this way. Parents are just doing what they need to.

Thanks for your contribution.

Still seems to me like this is one or two people writing 80% of the posts in this thread.

+100000

Asking my race and using that in admission is actually a crime.

My SIL told my nephew to put that he was Hispanic on his applications because HER stepfather was Mexican. He did and then was a nervous week about it. SIL has a lot of issues…

This is how I feel. When bumping a person ahead of others based on ethnicity happens regardless of hurdles, it’s patently unfair. Helping kids get a boost when they’ve not come from wealthy and educated parents…that’s one thing. Giving a kid a leg up when they go to a great high school and live in an expensive home simply because of ethnicity? No. What’s happening is that in the name of diversity ALL minorities get a leg up (thought not guaranteed admissions), which is what people complain about. Whether it results in kids lying…that’s what I’m not sure about.

Stupidest take on the thread. Just ignore the data if it doesn’t fit your narrative!

No, this is what the colleges say, and lots of people believe it.
