Have you been accepted to Ivymount or are you just inquiring if this might be a good fit? Ivymounts strength is autism. The academics there are behind what is offered at MCPS. If your childs disability is physical rather than neurological, I don't think Ivymount would provide the peer group he would want for HS. |
| Got a request for a visit there. |
from who? Ivymount? Did CIEP send your childs referral packet to them? |
Yes CIEP sent my child's referral packet to Ivymount. I just don't think it's going to be a good fit. |
Do they have any social-emotional or behavioral differences? Ivymount specializes in autism. The PT’s and OT’s there are great but your kiddo may be bored socially. We are happy there academically and my kid is diploma track. |
Trust your instinct. I’m honestly surprised that Ivymount agreed to an interview. Academically what classes is your son taking in 8th? Does he require any academic accommodations or support in the classroom? Did he register for grade level or honors classes for 9th? APUSH? |
Currently in 9th grade. Taking all honors classes (there aren't any other options other than honors except for math) Honors US History not APUSH. Requires accommodations from a 1:1 in the classroom. |
No social/behavioral/emotional issues except for frustration from lack of support. |
Just my 2 cents—I can’t see how Ivymount is going to meet his needs socially or academically. What other schools were discussed? To confirm—the 1:1 is needed to support his physical disabilities—is this correct? |
| OP something is not adding up here. Why are they proposing a private placement? What happened at the LRE meeting? |
This is our situation. I realize it's apparently unique. The public high school hasn't been able to get my kid a competent 1:1 aide. We have been complaining all year that the school hasn't given the the accommodations listed on the IEP. Our advocate requested a referral to Central Office and Central Office agreed to it. |
Lawsuit time. Sorry! Is your kid at least safe? Is there a private school that can accomodate the physical issues? Will they let you hire a 1:1? Time to lawyer up. |
Mostly safe. Extremely frustrated. Hoping to hear from someone from experience at KTS. If the student body there has a little more diversity and might be a good fit. |
