VHSL Girls Lacrosse Spring 2023

I think the PPs summary is fair. As noted, injuries will play a factor. Oakton is good, but their JMU commit plays out of control, forcing things way too much. This type of play will not win championships and really doesn’t project to the next level. Yorktown simply comes down to who plays. I’d put them at the top if the two players come back. Dominion is the easy pick from this area in 4A. Who knows about 5A.

Agree about the oakton JMU player. She will rack up some yellow cards this year and if you shut her down, you just took away about 5-7 goals from oakton. Also agree on Dominion being a lock.

Opposing coaches should take note and respectfully remind the refs prior to games about players recklessly attacking the goal and to enforce charging and warding calls.

For 6A:

Oakton, Centreville and Westfield will battle for their district. All 3 will go far in regionals.

Robinson and Woodson are the top in their region

Down year for both Langley and Yorktown but someone has to win the region. Yorktown may not be as strong as last year's team.

Battlefield will win their region with no challenger in sight. They will go into States with losses to all the Fairfax county teams they play.

Oakton, CVille, Westfield and Langley, Yorktown (and even Madison) are all in the same region, so only 2 of them are going anywhere. Oakton and Yorktown start as the favorites, but any combo of the 6 could emerge.

Oakton this year, but make no bones about it, it's the only year they have a shot at states as they have nothing coming up in the pipeline after their core senior group graduates and will suffer for years. They have 2 very good middies but it will boil down to how well the coach understands his players strengths and weaknesses and of course not riding his players into the ground to prevent injury. Oakton is very predictable at what they do, if they change it up, they could go all the way.
Yorktown is right behind Oakton, pending if the rumors are true and a couple key players decide not to play this year. Strong head coach that knows the game and how to teach the game, excellent at planning ahead for big games.
Battlefield looks very good this year with a solid goalie and core group of seniors. Question is- can they hang with the top Fairfax County teams
Woodson will always be in contention to fight for states, couple solid players and goalie position with some key veterans coming back. Question is- can the coach actually coach his players and come up with a good game plan.
Robinson will be in contention as well as they always have athletes but lost some key players from last year. Some decent talent coming up the ranks but do they have the horses to keep up with the other teams mentioned above??
Langley lost a ton of players last year but is on the way down to being an average public school team. Their achilles heal is their head coach, she has no respect from the players and parents and doesnt understand how to use her players wisely and actually coach in big games. With that said, they will be way stronger on defense as a whole with a rock solid goalie and a couple athletic defenders to anchor her. Offense will be mediocre at best with only really one attacker and middie.
Cville- This is my pick for my sleeper team, dont count them out as they have a great coach who knows the game and building a solid program. They have a couple athletes that can play, but their weakness will be on defense. Don't take them lightly as they will come back to bite you.
Madison- Couple returning seniors but they will be slightly above average but will not make a run at states. Just like Langley, their reign is over and on the downfall. Their coach needs to step up and start building the program from the youth on up, some decent younger talent but they will rely heavily on a couple seniors.

Again, just my opinion, you are welcome to disagree, but i think the big factor will be injuries. If one of these teams loses a key player or two, they are cooked.

I think this is a fair analysis. Class 6 is fairly wide open this year with no one head and shoulders above. Two big factors are likely to be injuries (they always happen and I hear there may be some on some contenders) - who is healthy come May is a big factor and who is able to develop younger talent to step up and contribute (Both Yorktown and Battlefield got significant support from freshmen/Sophs last year). With no obvious dominant team right now, those who get younger players to develop over the season could make a run.

Oakton as a favorite, wouldn't put Yorktown in that same tier. Oakton then the next 4 mentioned. Madison graduated a lot of talent.

Bet on them making States or not winning games? What teams will they beat?

Westfield will surprise a few teams this year, watch out for them in 2024.

Probably a win against Falls Church.

The rest are Ls. Didn't they lose to Centreville last year with a better team than this year?

Battlefield had that game in hand didn’t mean a thing to them. Last game pouring down rain. Played to stay healthy for district tournament. But no wat taking the grittiness of Centreville on comeback win. This team looks just as good as last years. Key is loaded at key positions with players who are now experienced. 2 top tier goalies help out young defense. Just hope it all comes together for them because they have been working very hard after experiencing states last year. They are hungry.

I think the problem people have with Battlefield is they have come to these forums complaining about how they belong in the discussion with the top Nova teams. They did this while playing easy schedules and avoiding the best teams the past several seasons. They got the message this year and improved their schedule. The problem is they did it a year late and they scheduled teams this year who will not field teams anywhere near what they were just a year ago. To top it off while claiming they belong with the elite they didn’t schedule any top private schools like other top public teams have done this year and last.

I’m sure Battlefield will have a good team. But they will not get a lot of credit this year for beating teams that were once good. Worse for them if they lose any of these games they will catch more grief. And their region will not earn them any respect. Regardless of who they play this season they should have a cakewalk to states. Lots of pressure on them this year. Lose to any Ffx teams who will be having down years compared to past and their claims of being a top team will fall on deaf ears.
