Damn. Never have thought that is where the term came from.

It came from Sears in the 1920s. Has nothing to do with slavery. If anything people should be pissed that it’s a male descriptor. There’s no Madame Bedroom.

My (white, immigrant) grandmother used these kind of stairs in house where she was a domestic. I closed them up in a reno of my 1920s house and they are kind of an awkward broom closet now. So, yeah. Whatever.

Wait is that true? The term master bedroom was invented by Sears?!

My sister had those in a new build. Kitchen stairs. They were fab. They were closer to the kids rooms and hall bath. Made the house more functional.

Yeah that is my objection. Although I think it is funny when people change it from master’s to owner’s. I am like “How is that better?”

I don’t really care but if you are gonna change primary beats owners.

If you didn't want to deal with uncomfortable things, you shouldn't have bought an old house. I mean, you clearly bought a house that once had servants and possibly enslaved people (??) so I don't understand why you are only upset about the stairs and not the whole house? They were working throughout the entire house, not just on those stairs. You sound very strange, OP.

Anyway, lots of modern houses have back stairs that lead up to the main bedroom or a playroom from the kitchen. My sister's house has a nice staircase in the front and smaller one in the back that leads directly up to their private space.

I grew up in a house with a second staircase meant for domestic help. It was an old, large house and my parents were wealthy. That’s kind of the history of old things when you’re rich. Taking them out may make you feel more comfortable, but it will not erase the experience of the people who once used them. Devote this energy (and possibly massive amount of money) to furthering justice in the present. And anyway, as a kid I loved it. I thought they were my personal secret stairs.

Well said. If you have an old house chances are bad S happened there at one point in history.

I would be having my wife (playing the part of maid) in the servant stairway; I’d play the butler to her lonely rich wife every few times just to keep it fair.

Keep them!!
