$300k HHI
Me: Nordstrom, Jcrew, bcbg Max, are the main ones DH (picky shopper, good taste in clothes imo): boutique online retailers, bonobos, Todd Snyder Kids: Hanna Anderson, target, old navy, h&m, Uniqlo, Nordstrom, and then the usual like Nike/UA outlets |
Some Midwestern TJ Maxx's do. There's one in Ann Arbor that has an excellent selection. Here's a list of all stores with Runway: https://tjmaxx.tjx.com/store/jump/topic/Runway-Stores/24100001p |
I've bought great condition Prada cashmere from The Real Real, but I wouldn't buy it from Poshmark. The Real Real is more expensive, but they are more like a traditional consignment store where they do product intake and authenticate items and condition. (Their authenticity checking isn't perfect, but they are always willing to take an item back if you even have a question.) |
A few years ago, my answer would have been more like yours when I was late 30s, though even then I tended to shop on sale. (Our HHI is now ~$1M, and it was probably $700K back then.) Nowadays I mostly shop consignment + staples from lower end or discount/outlet stores of the major department stores (Nordstrom Rack, Off 5th Saks). I wear a lot of the same brands as you, though. I don't tend to be particularly trendy and wear clothes for years, so buying last season's Rag & Bone t-shirt from the outlet is NBD to me. I was raised UMC with a mindset of "what is something worth" vs. "what I can afford"...and I was a grad student for a long time. I don't see the need to pay more to end up looking the same. It's also the case that I'm a petite size, so buying in store is hard since they often don't have my size. |
Yes, plus buying things on Poshmark and eBay means you can get good deals on designer items. |
Every profession has its highlights and lowlights. In my agency, as a group, the lawyers are well-dressed and the economists not so much. |
I totally appreciate that it’s a bit silly to pay more to look the same, and there are plenty of people who spend WAY WAY less than I do and look ten times better! But shopping is so darn fun. Reading this thread almost makes me feel guilty at how much I spend but it’s the shopping itself that is the hobby, not so much the owning or wearing of the clothes. I suppose I might feel differently when I get older though - right now I’m at the nexus of having a healthy amount of money and still being young enough to be fashionable, but I can see myself settling into a more basic, classic wardrobe when I’m in my late 40s. |
HH $550k. I embrace recycled clothing and shop high-end consignment like Vestiaire & RealReal. So I wear Burberry, Brunello Cuccinelli, Loro Piana, Chanel, Valentino etc. For casual, I like AG Jeans & Mother, White & Warren cashmere and Xirena tops. I also buy from RueLaLa and other discounters. Occasionally, if there’s something really unique that I want and can’t find elsewhere, I buy from Saks, Bloomingdale’s, individual designers and boutiques. |
HHI- 2 mil
NW-20 mil To be honest I hate shopping! I find it tedious. I have a personal shopper/image consultant who tracks any big events I have on my calendar and he pulls what he thinks will work/I'll like. He keeps a running list of what I have in storage too (I don't like to keep my formal wear at home, after an event it's picked up for cleaning and then he stores it somewhere.) I don't mind repeating outfits with different accessories. Otherwise, my daily wardrobe has about 30 items per season or less. I get stressed if my closet looks too full, so it is rotated out every few months. Right now I have about 5 various linen or silk blouses, 3 linen wide cut trousers, 2 pairs linen shorts, 2 silk dresses, 1 linen dress that can be worn as a duster, 1 linen blazer, 2 swimsuits, and 1 oversized linen shirt that I use as a coverup. Lounge clothes are 2 cashmere short sleeve sweaters and 2 pairs of joggers. A couple of work out sets. 5 pairs of shoes-heels, pumps, flats, trainers, sandals. 2 sets of silk pyjamas. My daily carry is a super old giant birkin tote, or a lindy if I don't need the tote. Chanel makes a super cute phone holder that I have my eye on. |
HHI about 3M
I shop at Saks and Bloomingdale’s, plus directly from brands like Staud, Alice and Olivia, Milly, L’Agence, Veronica Beard, and occasionally Hermes, Burberry, or Dior. I used to shop at Neiman Marcus but I feel like they’ve gone downhill recently. I also shop at Real Real and local consignment stores (where I sell my clothing as well). I don’t do fast fashion, even for the kids. My DH uses a personal shopper who mostly gets things from Nordstrom and Bonobos and can order custom made suits and dress shirts for work. |
HHI a little over $1M.
I work in a pretty high powered position so I spend on work clothes. I love Scanlon Theodore, Bloomingdale's and Saks. I also shop at Alice and Olivia, Zara, Banana Republic and the Real Real. I'm all over the place. |
I'm in my 50s. I'm never going basic. My mom is in her 80s and never leaves the house without looking fabulous. |
HHI about $175k, net worth probably 2 million (house and retirement).
Relatively low monthly outlays (2k mortgage, no car note, no student loans). Kids clothes come almost entirely from H and M. My clothes: Free people, Zara and Reformation, plus lots of consignment from Secondi or occasionally ThredUp, and includes brands like Diane von furstenburg (my favorite blazer) and Armani (best dress). |
Where do you buy your linen and silk items? |
More than yours and shop at the same places except J Crew, Sephora and Lululemon. My makeup is drugstore, Macy's or health food store, skincare from the farmers market and health food store. Workout gear is Athleta or even Amazon sometimes. Sometimes I snatch up something from Talbot's. Amazon can also be good for clothes I will only wear once or twice, like items for themed parties. I also hit up ebay for high quality, barely used vintage clothing in *actual* x-small sizes since vanity sizing makes shopping a trial. |
