Yay Lunch

i think it's awful. they advertise that they offer healthy food. our school has fast casual chinese (pee wei), pizza, hamburgers/hotdogs. sure there might be a salad option, but in no way is yay lunch a healthy alternative to regular "hot lunch." i follow them on instagram and i want to know where those lunches are being served b/c it's not at my kids' school. needless to say, we're bringing lunch.

The sides we can add on to fried chicken entree are fries, a donut, or bacon. How about fresh fruit or a side salad?

Our school offered it for one year after Covid (2021). My 6th grader said tiny portions, cold food. School has switched to Fairfax Foods, which is no better. Sigh, no hot lunch for us for the third year in a row.

I lOVE the food service at my DC’s school. So happy.

Our school sent an email home this week saying that they are looking at other options starting as soon as possible.

We were happy enough with Yay Lunch last year, but this year they have switched to a caterer three times a week and it’s abysmal. I’ve commented on their IG and just completed their email survey. My son will no longer buy on the caterer days and stick to the restaurant days. We’ll see how long that lasts. The pictures on IG are a joke; the actual food looks nothing like that!

Just got this message from Yay (Boo) Lunch and cannot understand why our school is still contracting with them. Last year was awful and it just seems to get worse. Clearly their business model is not working well.

“Due to logistical concerns, we will not be serving included sides with pre-order meals for your first few weeks of service. This is not a permanent change, and we are confident that streamlining our menu will significantly improve the level of service for you and your luncher.

For pre-orders served the week of September 25, we will not be serving an included side and will credit your account for the cost of a side. Those credits will be applied to your account before it is billed the Saturday after service. We will be in touch as soon as included sides are back on the menu.”

Good luck getting your money back. I was promised a credit to my account a couple times last year when food wasn't delivered and they just could not make it happen. Not a fan.

Because we already had a bad experience with them last year, we didn’t even order any meals for this year. I do feel bad for those that did though.

Teacher here:
Today's lunch featured no fruit or salad options b/c they are cutting out sides for a while to streamline the process.

Yet, there were chips and prepackaged salsa. The chips were about a handful, and they were stale. I gave them to a kid who had no snack.
He threw them out. He was 12.

This is the 2nd year for my kids’ school. Last year was much better. This year is terrible and my kids do not want to buy it. Missing items, cold food, it takes forever for them to get their lunch.

I was glad to see this thread--Yay Lunch at my kid's school was tolerable last year (just ordered it twice a week for variety) and then this year the offerings are terrible and more expensive. And the servings are very small. I caved and ordered my kids the pizza once a week and now the banana or apple side is no longer provided due to "vendor/supply issues". The bananas were green the one week that they were offered... Yaylunch has gone from not great to terrible.

Why do schools use them? Maybe our school can look elsewhere too.

Our kids like it, because it's pizza etc, but they also said the serving size was a bit small. We think it's very expensive for what it is and are a bit annoyed that we have to shell out $10 for basically 2 slices.

Don't understand why the seniors dont just sell pizza slices as a prom fundraiser like we used to do.

Just got a notice that Yay Lunch is ceasing service at our school. Wondering if this is a school-specific thing or they are shutting down all over?
