Isn’t the admissions process race blind? I thought every applicant is identified by a random ID number. |
Parent of a recent TJ grad here. TJ was much more inclusive of my STEM loving nerd kid than they're base HS ever would have been. Bonus that they made a HS team. TJ may have issues but for some kids it was the best option available. And talk about diversity - maybe not the PC version of diversity but my kid learned how what it was like and how to operate as a minority.
Signed, White mom of a white kid who test prepped by doing the practice tests on the website. |
The fact that TJ exists is pure evil. It goes against all that public education stands for. |
That's an absurd statement. Total nonsense. |

Let me finish your post: “Why are so many posters dead set against diversity and inclusion? I’ve done no research on this and am basing my terse hot take on the need to express reflexive, performative wokeness for my peers! I’m virtuous! Can’t you tell? Even though schools like TJ and Stuyvesant in NY had a race neutral entrance exam, open to all who studies hard enough, it’s still the complete and total fault of racism that there were disproportionate amounts of Asian and white students represented. In fact, rather than hard work, and trying to produce the most qualified students, who can go on to work as brain surgeons and astronauts, we need to end the entrance exam of relax standards because we all know engineered social outcomes always work. It’s racist to even question this new process. In fact you will be canceled if you do, so get on board!” |
I can only speak for myself. The exceptional Black and Brown students of my acquaintance were never interested in TJ. They were recruited heavily by elite NE boarding schools or D.C privates and ended up attending more than a couple of them.
There are low-income, brilliant Asian or White students who have never prepped. DCUM told me that these students don't exist. |
Not PP, but TJHSST wasn't created for educational purposes. It was created for marketing purposes by the county Board of Supervisors when the BOS was controlled by Republicans courting west coast defense contractors to rent space in suburban office parks. Then, of course, once created it became something for some kids to aim for, and eventually mostly a place that just kids of one ethnicity aimed for. |
Well that is changing now. |
You say this as if it's a bad history, an evil history. Creating a magnet school isn't a bad thing, courting businesses with schools isn't a bad thing. Republicans are pro-education at the local level and are generally excellent stewards. |
That's the first I ever heard of it. GOP is generally hostile to any use of taxes that isn't about protecting property rights i.e. Police or Military. They really don't care if middle-class kids get an education. In fact, they would gladly replace it with a crappy voucher system. |
Oh those TJ students certainly ‘collaborate’!!! |
Oh, you mean the brilliant, unprepped Asian and White kids aren't getting in because their parents sacrificed to buy in a feeder cluster? |
You don't know what the meaning of "race-neutral" is. You mean to say "race-blind", which is factually correct but irrelevant to the conversation. |
It isn't a good thing that kids of limited ethnicities (one is inaccurate, but it's a low number) are the only ones interested in TJ. |
