Pay to Play Culture of DGS = This is why we can't have nice schools...

Anonymous
...and the ones we do have cost 3x more than schools in neighboring jurisdictions (or built by charters).

Chris Weaver wanted no part in this corruption.

Disgusting. Bowser is an abomination (no less than previous mayors, but nonetheless).

My kingdom for a technocrat that's willing to piss everyone off.

This is how mediocre politicians get one term.

Way to go Muriel.

Bring on Kenyan, Karl or gasp, Vince Grey.

Talk about ACTUAL corruption.

Vince Grey would actually be a breath of fresh air. Seriously.

Bowser is the absolute worst. At least with Gray you felt he cared a tiny bit about his hometown.

I'm not convinced that a preference for local contractors is a entirely bad thing. These projects serve are supposed to serve multiple purposes including increasing employment in the city.

That builds the middle class and would mean fewer children in poverty entering school.

The offensive part is Bowser coming in and pushing around lower level staff at DGS for not picking the contractor of her choice, which so happens to be a campaign contributor. Outrageous!

But the DGS initial decision stood and the local contractor didn't get the project. And the losing bidder (contributor) had best technical score. I don't

Umm. The local contractor bid $16 million and the out-of-state contractor bid $6 million. This is not close: the locals are fleecing the city and those that fund it (us).

I couldn't believe those numbers but, yes, that's indeed what the article says.

"In February, the city opened the bidding to redevelop St. Elizabeths East. Documents show Fort Myer bid $16 million. Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co., one of the nation’s biggest construction firms, bid $6 million."

What a joke.

Bowser has lost any credibility. I hope the feds conduct a serious criminal investigation of her administration.

And Gilbane won the contract.

Let's see if they actually bring it in for the $6 million.

Anonymous
Gilbane won the contract and as punishment, the Mayor wanted the DGS staffers fired. The Admiral resigned in protest.

Total BS. Buh-bye Murial, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I think Gilbane is a good choice and they do a bunch of work in this area and have local staff. I have friends and neighbors who are site managers. That being said, $6 million seems low for the work needed at St. Elizabeth's, right? I'm not a pro but that isn't a lot of money for a campus that size.

+1.

The next Catania should run on a simple anti-corruption platform.

This is just for putting in the roads and sidewalks as well as water and electrical infrastructure. Given the cost disparity, it is a no brainer to not go with Ft Myer. It does raise the question of how much Ft Myer and other preferred contractors were receiving for other projects and where that extra money ended up. I notice Adrian Fenty doesn't work these days. I guess he made a killing being Mayor.
