Walking 20-30k steps a day

If you walk this much how do you do it?

I do that occasionally, but generally only on vacations where walking is the order of the day. I think my max is like 35K. My steps are (very roughly) 2K per mile. So that's 10-15 miles per day. To get 20-30 in regular life it has to be a relatively active day + a conscious decision to walk / run the extra miles.

I'm a floor nurse in a hospital who sits down only to chart. I work 12 hour shifts. I never hit 35k steps.

If someone like me cannot hit that number during the work day, I'd be most curious to see what kind of person could.

Or are we just taking about purpose-driven walking/running as exercise?

Isn't 10,000 steps 5 miles? So 35,000 steps would be around 22 miles? That's a lot walking.

I walk to and from (or partly to and/or from) work many days, so I often hit in the 17-24k range. It's a LOT of miles, but only about two hours total.

I know someone who says she does. Part of her job is serving coffee at a counter, so her fitbit counts every step to and from the coffee machine. Or sideways to fill another cup.

When I've done 25k I'm exhausted. Unless you are a distance runner this is hard to do on a regular basis.

I regularly walk between 20-30k steps a day,,but I walk just about everywhere I need to go on purpose. I walk my kids to and from school, I walk to the store, I walk to the gym, I walk to appointments, etc. I will walk in all kinds of weather, I just really, really enjoy being outside. I work from home so I run a lot of errands during the day, all usually walking them. On days I go over 30k, it is usually a special circumstance, like I have dropped my car at the dealership which is 5 miles away, and walked home and then at some point have to walk back to get, or I am on vacation site seeing walking everywhere (last month I had 38k in a day walking around Paris).

I usually do around 20K with a walking desk at work. It is amazing.

I can do it as a dog walker in the am, then dance teacher in the afternoon, then go to the gym in the evening. I also don't have a car so walk everywhere.

I do it with an early morning run, workout class around 9:30 and just chasing kids or an afternoon hike with them.

On my runs, 10K steps is about 5 miles. If I'm walking, my miles need more steps... more like 12K steps for 5 miles.

Not sure how you converted to 22 miles, but if you're going on the 10K steps = 5 miles, 35K steps would be 17.5 miles.

Are you training for cross fit? Better to run then.

I ran 9 miles this AM and then went on a 3 mile walk. Combined with two more miles of general walking around, I hit 28,000. And, yes, I'm exhausted. I regularly do 20,000 or more a day, but it's because I'm a runner. Without any exercise, I usually end up around 5,500 steps for the day...including chasing around. 3 little kids.
