S/O: Everyday Math vs. Common Core curriculum

Anonymous
If you had a choice between Everyday Math and a public school CC curriculum what would you choose?

Common Core is not a curriculum. It's a set of standards students are supposed to reach at different points in each grade level. Curricula in many states are based on these standards.

Anything is better than Everyday Math. It is horrid. I say this as a person who has taught Singapore Math to her kids, so I can see how important it is to conceptually understand math. It is a dumbed down, Americanized version of Asian math. It never teaches anything in depth. One day is measuring, the next day is shapes, the next day some problems involving money. It is taught on a superficial level. What the teach in third grade Everyday Math is taught in first grade Singapore Math (Marshall Cavendish version).

+1

Our school has Everyday Math and we follow the common core standards.

But what do you call the math program followed by public schools? I call it CC curriculum because it was written for CC.

So is the version of Everyday Math in current use. So is the most recent release of Singapore Math, the most recent recent release of Saxon Math, and other curricula.

What you call the math program followed by your local public school depends on the area and the curriculum they've chosen.

OK, what's better (or lesser evil), Everyday Math or Go Math?

Which public school system are you in? They vary in which curriculum they use to meet the CC standards.

Go Math is new, right? There won't be much data yet on whether it's effective. Here's a summary of different ones. I don't see any studies with just a casual search that include Go Math.

"GO Math! was written specifically to support the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics". That's why I call it Common Core math.

I personally don't think it's terrible. I just don't know how much better or worse Everyday Math is.

I think Go Math is better. It is not as good as Singapore Math. But much better than everyday math. It does not spiral nearly as much. It follows quite closely to Singapore Math, just not as good.

My kid takes Go Math at school and I supplement with Singapore math at home. They have nothing in common.

Really? You don't find their strategies in solving problems quite similar? They even use the same terms.
