My child is currently in 4th grade at Laytonsville Elementary. We are considering building a house in the Olney/Ashton area-- if we decide to go this route, are we able to use the address of the house we are building to change schools? I would prefer that my son start the school year at the new school rather than start in the middle of the school year, I think... but I'm not sure what the policies on enrollment are in this situation.
A couple of my friends did that a few years ago, and their new houses weren't done til late fall and early December. I think you just need to show the paperwork for the building contract or whatever it is (I've never built a new house), and they will enroll your kid in the new school district. Give them a call now to see.
You need a contract if you're buying a house. For building a house, it may be different. I've never built a home so I don't know at what point you actually "buy" it. You would need to apply for a Change of School Assignment (COSA). Look up the number to the transfer office on the MCPS website and ask them. The secretaries have been really helpful in my experience.
OP here. I called the school today, and was told that the "move in" date was the date that they looked at... and that it couldn't be more than 30 days away when I enrolled him. FYI.
zdo you own the property? If so, you can use that address. just bring the papers showing ownership or utilities in your name.
