DC is dangerous. Again.

Last night there were a series of armed robberies in DC. Robbers walked up to victims with handguns, and, in some cases, sawed-off shotguns. One of these incidents took place on Pennsylvania Avenue as you enter Georgetown.

Many on DCUM did not live in DC during the armed robberies and armed car-jackings during the '90s. It was pretty bad. So bad, the FBI was brought in because DC Police could not stop.

Back in the day, DC had more violent crime than New York and Baltimore. Let's hope those days aren't coming back.

Lanier had a good run. Time for someone new who can address this increase in violent crime.

You live in the suburbs, OP, so why worry about it?

Nothing to see here, move along. The urban experience, keepin' it real.

I've never understood how Lanier came to power, much less retained it.

Well that's cheerful.

Do you actually have a question?

It's amusing to read the macho posters who talk about crime as part of the urban experience. Obviously they have never been on the receiving end of a stick-up.

12:55 Threads are discussions, not Q and As. Surely this topic is worthy of discussion.

"Nah man, you aren't really a city dweller until you've been mugged."

I'll happily forgo any street cred if it means I never have a gun pointed at me.

Discussions get the politicians reacting.

If the drumbeats are loud enough they change police chiefs.

Maybe we need warning signs at the airports and hotels to let visitors know that the wildlife is getting cranky.

You think it's visitors that are the victims of all these violent crimes?

You seem kinda shook up.

Yep.

My parents have been here since the 60s---when the race riots were happening and city streets were burning.

Part of the reason I grew up in the Fairfax suburbs was because my parents, like many, many others, fled the crime.

There were entire areas of DC we avoided...and times my dad did take us to events with caution or a visiting relative would get lost in a very rough area, etc... We all remarked in the last decade how we now are going out to places and events that nobody would have dreamed of going to in the 70s, etc.

I was thinking the same thing, OP. WTH is happening???? We are just over the DC line in VA and there has definitely been in uptick in crime--assaults, robberies, etc. over here as well.

It is tough to make ends meet on 450k HHI. Gotta provide for the family.
