I assume a lot of DCUM posters who claim that their kids are now in private and they're so glad because the education is so much better are lying. I think it's harder to lie on FB because most posters are identifiable. And I doubt that the children of all 1000+ APE members are in private.

I am probably considered by some to be of the Masks Forever contingent, but I'm really a Global Pandemics Suck and You Too Will Feel the Impact. My kids didn't love remote education, but they got by. They are capable of catching up and finishing their educational career where they need to be.

And I think there needs to be an off ramp for masking. I'd suggest a certain percentage of a school population (students, teachers, and staff) needs to be vaxxed and then the teacher can choose to unmask. A higher percentage and the kids in the classroom can be unmasked, too.

So teachers, who statistically are at a greater risk of COVID than even unvaccinated children, can unmask first (even though most transmission in schools comes from adults), but kids have to wait?!? What?! If offramps are really about COVID transmission, then there's no way teachers should be able to unmask before kids.

Offramps should definitely not be tied vaccination of kids, but case rates, because of equity. As Julia Raifman told the NYTimes this week: "I like the link to cases and not to vaccination,” because there are such large inequities related to vaccine status, Raifman said, and removing mask policies during periods of high transmission “just concentrates the risk” among these under-vaccinated communities."

So many countries in Europe don't mask kids in school and they don't have vaccines for kids (some of which aren't even approving vaccines for kids any time soon). Countries like France and Germany do offramps in schools on a state/department-level based on case rates. For France's offramps, the vast majority of US states would qualify right now, including VA.

Offramps are about balancing risks and rewards. Teachers who are providing instruction to an entire class may find it easier to do so without a mask and may choose to do so.

There's a higher risk of transmission from an unmasked teacher, but I think most people would say ease of communication makes it worth it.

Kids who are listening to a teacher, working alone, or working in small groups may be less likely to transmit the virus, but there is also less impact on their ability to communicate when they wear a mask.

I’m a liberal democrat, my kids will be vaxed this weekend at the earliest appointment I could get, and I support test to stay. My kids are in APS even though we can afford private.

Isn’t this supposed to be about AEM. Can someone please tell me if SJ-H is a real person. I think she’s just a puppet for some vocal regular on AEM, but I would love someone to just confirm that she is real and they know her IRL.

I’m a liberal democrat, my kids will be vaxed this weekend at the earliest appointment I could get, and I support test to stay. My kids are in APS even though we can afford private.

Same situation here, but many of my neighbors put their kids in private over the past year. We’re in an elementary school where we lost in very large amount of students to private. Quite frankly I’m not sure these families will be coming back. They seem happy in their new schools.

Dcum is an equal playing field, with virtually all posters remaining anonymous. AEM is not an equal playing field when it allows one person (a few people?) to hide their identities while everyone else is presenting as their true selves.
