MacFarland leader selected

Well this looks positive for us. Between Aqueelah James at Roosevelt and Mark Sanders at MacFarland, I like the leadership moves.

MacFarland community members, we’ve got some exciting news on MacFarland leadership! As you may recall, Roosevelt Principal Aqueelha James will be Principal of MacFarland for the next two years with the support of a bilingual Assistant Principal. In early April DCPS asked a group of community members, parents, and MacFarland Community Cabinet members to meet the candidates for MacFarland AP and make a recommendation to the Chancellor. We’re happy to announce today that the panel’s recommendation, Mark Sanders, has accepted an offer to join MacFarland’s leadership team!

Mr. Sanders has a ten year track record of success as a bilingual educator, starting out as a Spanish teacher and serving as Assistant Principal at McKinley Tech High School and Powell Elementary School. He has a Masters in Education from Harvard University’s School Leadership Program and is a current Mary Jane Patterson Fellow at Woodson Senior High School.

Poor Powell - two losses in two years?

I read that as him coming from H.D. Woodson, no? And it'd be a win for Powell to have someone solid to continue the dual language track through MS.

He left to join the principal fellowship program, so he's been gone for nearly two years. He had come from middle/high school before so it wasn't surprising that he wasn't staying at elementary. He was great, though! This is great for MacFarland.

Mr. Sanders is in a Mary Jane Patterson principal fellowship this year and was a bilingual assistant principal at Powell over the past several years. There's a lot to recommend him for this job, not just that he is a known leader from MacFarland's feeder, but also his experience, goals for urban education and interest in bringing communities together in the school are right on. And it's meaningful to me that his is a DCPS family, seeing as ours is.

Are you saying because he's been around DCPS? Or his kids go to DCPS?

Not the PP, but his kids attend a DCPS.
