Wussification of America: Arlington Parks and Rec edition

Nice job, Arlington Parks and Rec. Great job, great effort

We had a game this afternoon, and the snow stopped around noon. Yet Parks and Rec went ahead and canceled all games today by 11:00 AM.

Thanks fellas. Our boys have got to get reps against live pitching, but they won't because a bureaucrat says no. They desperately need experience fielding in live game conditions, and when you don't know where the ball's going to go. But no, Arlington Parks and Rec doesn't see it that way because "families need to plan their days".

I wrote about this earlier this week, how our travel teams and eventually the high school programs suffer because adults make bad decisions.

Today's canceled game is gone. Coach pitch is about kids learning to hit and field. You need to learn how much to get the job done not just when it's sunny and 75 degrees, but also when it's drizzling and struggling to climb over 40.

Coaches Doug Grove and John Skaggs, at W-L and Yorktown, respectively, are a game UNDER .500 this season. They're paying now for the missed reps from cancelling Coach pitch games ten years ago...games they played out in Fairfax County!

This is where we fall behind. A kid in House league may catch the sniffles playing today. Maybe some South Lakes kid will come down with lymphoma in 20 years after getting reps in on crumb rubber turf.

We can't know the unknown. What we DO KNOW is that great Arlington high school coaches are losing games NOW because their kids missed game reps ten years ago. Reps that can't be replaced. And thanks to Arlington County Parks and Rec, we're making the same mistake again, canceling Coach pitch games because it's cold (but ABOVE FREEZING) and it MIGHT rain this afternoon (but it's NOT)!!!

If you're talking about synthetic turf you might have a point.

OP here: That's part of it. We are losing games at the high school level and on the travel circuit because we make our boys wimps. The kids who make U-8 travel need tougher competition in House league to get ready. That doesn't happen when you're worked up about kids breathing rubber into their lungs, or some kid who can't even hit in Coach pitch catches the flu playing in some rain.

I took my kids to Upton Hill today, but it's not the same. I tried to take them into a field to practice, but a County official told me to get off the field.

So Coaches Grove and Skaggs, don't get upset with me ten years from now when your runner fails to take out the second baseman. I tried, but this wimp County doesn't want you to win.

Yeah, the Nats cancelled their 4:05 game because of cold weather too. Bunch of wusses - they'll never make it to the pro level.

Someone sounds a little too invested in youth sports

I hope that our 5:45 game is canceled!

Bite me.

I was glad my husband did t have to coach 2 7-year old rec soccer games at 10 and 11 today. Kids that young don't get much out of it when the weather and fields suck that much.

And, yes, I am a former D-1 soccer player and track athlete and played in all kinds of conditions and with injuries I shouldn't have and I still think this was a good call.

OP, you sound like one of the insane sports parents that make me want to skip all of my kids' games. CTFD.

I agree it is crazy to cancel due to a minute of snow, but I also think you need a grown-up hobby.

OP here: the Nats canceled because they can reschedule into a split-admission doubleheader say in August and get a way better gate (and concessions and parking sales) than today.

If this were an AL or West Coast team on its only visit, Nats play.

Try again, Chief.

Orioles still planning to play tonight against division rivals ... it is 4:45 now.

I'd say it it time for OP to find a hobby of his/her own. Yikes. Parents like this make me not want to have my kid participate in youth sports.

That the Nats cancelled is RIDICULOUS.
