AES/USAV Rankings are useless algorithms. They aren’t people actually ranking teams. For example, a team could play in the club division at tournaments, hardly ever lose, and be ranked higher than a team that plays tougher competition all year. |
maybe add in: are the players happy and intrincially motivated to play? Are the coaches a positive influence on them? Are the coaches helping the player grow? Does the team operate as a team or as individuals pitted against each other? There are a lot of non-tangibles that make a club work or not work for an individual player and family. |
All USAV Nationals bids have been finalized. Not a bad haul (43 bids, I think). Too bad the region couldn't reclaim the additional bids earned-but-declined by Blue Ridge.
It would be interesting to see total bids earned by region. I'm certain some smart folks here are up to the challenge of figuring that our. ![]() The breakdown: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/435/1219014.page#29732231 . |
Let's return this thread to its original purpose. Here are some volleyball activities (camps, clinics, leagues) available throughout the summer:
https://mdmontgomeryctyweb.myvscloud.com/webtrac/web/search.html (include the search term "volleyball") A lot of these activities have waitlists already. I didn't expect the camps to be so expensive - not sure how they justify the cost. |
The camps at the link you included are ~$350 for 5 days from 9-4. Honestly, that seems like a really good deal compared to camps put on by colleges or clubs. A 3-day all skills camp at American University in July is $477 https://register.ryzer.com/camp.cfm?sport=8&id=295556. I’m curious what you’d expect to pay for a full week camp? |
They are a good deal regarding how much you pay per hour, not for the quality of the instruction. Honestly, I would take advantage of these camps if my DD was a beginner. But - as a club player - this camp would be a waste of time. We tried to return to a rec league last summer just to get a few more touches, but I would not do it again. Clearly you cannot compare the pricing with that of most clubs or colleges. There is no way I am going to drop $477 for the AU skill camp because of our particular circumstances. My DD will not play in college, so we see no point in throwing that kind of money at the sport. Other families may see things differently, they may have extra cash, and they might be willing to spend it. I am not judging. |
Summer Volleyball Camp through Maryland Sports Academy. $380 for 4x per week, Adventist Health Care Fieldhouse 2 sessions (July 14-17, July 21-24). My DD participated as a beginner and she liked it. Apparently, they have courts for more advanced players, but we never tried those.

MEVC posted their summer camps / clinics. Too many to list here individually:

My 17s player just asked me to help decipher the USAV notice to the Alaska and Southern California regions.
https://usavolleyball.org/story/a-message-to-our-members-update-regarding-regional-associations/ I can only presume that adults are behaving badly ... for whatever reason. Is this something new or has this been festering for a while? ... Update ... to answer my own question, I guess. How competitive is MOCO U15? What is the acceptance rate of most clubs? |
MOCO has 3 U15 teams this year. Their top team competed for a bid at CHRVA bids which is generally the top 12 teams in the region. Their second and third teams were roughly middle of the pack in CHRVA, around 70-80 out of ~160 teams. I think this year all three teams are going to AAU nationals. Acceptance rate varies a lot by club and depends on how many players try out, how many returning players they have and if the coach or club is already recruiting players from other clubs. For the better teams and larger clubs its not unusual to see tryout numbers in the 80-140 player range, with ~12 players per team accepted. Some clubs take fewer (MVSA) while others sometimes take more (Metro, Paramount, MDJrs, VA Elite, etc.) You can see how many players are on the roster for teams you are interested in through AES. If you are thinking about next club season, the best approach is to look at the results from the age group one year younger. Most clubs have a number of returning players each year. If you want to get a good idea of the competitive level prior to tryouts, the best approach is to go to the fall clinics that most clubs run. |
We have a MOCO thread and these questions and insights would be better posted there in the long term. Let's keep this thread for camps, clinics, leagues and other types of Volleyball action. |

MVSA Rec League is open for registration: https://www.mvsavbc.org/rec-registration
It fills out quickly, so sign up ASAP. My DD outgrew it, but we will remember it fondly. MVSA is great at balancing the teams to make sure the games are competitive - it was better than any tournaments we've been to. |
