NIH wants millions more for cancer research.
Isn't it prudent to identify more CAUSES of cancer, and AVOID them? |
A major cause of cancer is life, years of living. Or genetics, I suppose. Are you saying that only cancer-free people should pass on their genes? |
There fixed it for you. |
They are looking for causes and how to catch it early. Cancer can't just be prevented by environmental changes and personal behaviors- there are many causes of cancer and types of cancer.
Honestly I must be bored I'm not sure why I'm replying to such a stupid question |
I don't think anyone is opposed to learning more about causes of and effective treatments for cancer, I think the debate is more about how much benefit we can really expect to get along those lines for $755 billion to the NIH and FDA. Researchers seem to be very split on the answer to that question. |
Sounds like Biden's driving even more billions of dollars for cancer treatment. |
Good luck with that. http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/oct/28/116-things-that-can-give-you-cancer-list |
The list includes widely used oral contraceptives. |
The predominant life style cancers are those related to tobacco and sun exposure. Those are a minority of all cancer cases and are on the decline. I know why you have to just an asshole about lifestyle, because you are afraid of cancer. But, you are largely punishing the victim. 1/2 of all people will get cancer in there lifespan. In my case, it is bad genes. I want the money to be spent on treatments; prevention is good, but we know the big issues there: tobacco and sun. We don't know why my neighbor's 18 month old got neuroblastoma. Or why my father and I got kidney cancer. It is probably something in the genetics that allows it to happen. But please to not [b]blame the victim. Because Karma is a bitch. |
You're the only one "blaming the victim" on this thread, 5:54. Are you profiting from the cancer epidemic, by any chance? |
I am blaming the victim? How? By saying most cancers are not caused by lifestyle. I suggest you learn compassion and get therapy. You are saying most cancers are caused by lifestyle. I say, in response, you are wrong, most are caused for non-lifestyle causes. You see, you want to believe that, with the proper lifestyle, you will not get cancer. Well life does not work that way. The people that I know that focus on cancer want nothing more than to find something to stop/prevent it. For example, a pill to counteract the effects of the BRCA mutation. I just want to stay alive. 15 years ago, I would not have survived for as long as I have. There is no cancer conspiracy...the NIH, the physicians in private practice, etc want nothing more than to put themselves out of business. You, on the other hand, seem to think that there is this massive conspiracy. There isn't. You need to take your special meds or get help. I am serious. |
Yes NIH funds cancer prevention research. There is a branch within NCI called the Division of Cancer Prevention -

+1 As a cancer survivor I am sick and tired of being blamed for my own disease. I was a vegetarian my entire adult life, physically fit and did everything "right." PP is right that the only clear environmental causes of cancer are tobacco and sun. There are some dietary issues that might make a slight difference -- for example lower weight lowers the risk of breast cancer because extra fat stores extra estrogen. But as a resident member of cancer world I can tell you that most women with breast cancer are not obese. Cancer is a disease of aging. We will never be able to prevent it in any large numbers. The more cells divide, the more random (or not random, maybe genetic) opportunities for bad call divisions, especially as we age. of course younger people get cancer but if you live long enough your chances go way up. OP, I get that you are afraid and want to hang on to the magic formula to prevent cancer. There are some prevention studies -- I'm in one. But we will never be able to prevent cancer away. And you will never be safe. I was shocked when I was diagnosed, I had no risk factors. Except that I'm alive. |
You are working so hard to establish that those of us who got cancer must have brought it on ourselves. Anyone who disagrees must be "profiting." I didn't profit from my 8 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, 35 rounds of radiation and ten years of medication except that I'm alive, so I guess I did. |
. There are many cancers associated with lifestyle risks beyond smoking and sun exposure. Diet, drinking and a sedentary lifestyle are all associated with increased risk of any number of diseases including cancer. Yes, some people can do everything right and still get the short end of the stick. However, pointing out that many of us are leading a lifestyle that increases our risk does not make me an asshole. It makes me a realist. People need to get their head out of the sand and realize the power of the plate. |
