I don't think Trump understands what is actually happening. |
Yeah, being denied coverage because of preexisting conditions was so great ... Do you think people came up with the ACA because what we had before was working? |
that was the safe guard to avoid people getting insurance last minute when they didn't pay into it. |
No it was just a way to let insurance companies deny claims to people who paid for insurance (remember most people get insurance through their job so they aren’t getting jobs “last minute”). Remember another part of ACA was a requirement that insurers actually have to pay 80% of premiums collected for medical care because pre-ACA they weren’t even doing that. |
| I remember two things that were prevalent pre-ACA: Large numbers of uninsured people showing up at ERs for routine medical care (because they couldn’t be turned away for inability to pay) and working class people with “pre-existing conditions” going bankrupt and losing their homes to pay for life saving care. |
|
Pre-ACA, my brother-in-law with rheumatoid arthritis had a lapse in heath insurance after the restaurant he worked at suddenly closed. He is disease was never once again covered by insurance even as he worked. Eventually his family went bankrupt from medical debt, and he died in his 50s with painful gnarled hands from substandard care.
This is what you want to go back to?? This man wanted to work and be productive! |
Or just dying. It was not uncommon to hide a cancer diagnosis because treatment would bankrupt your family. This particularly hit people in their fifties and sixties when lay offs would happen. |
That could all be avoided by having a universal plan available for everyone. We must be the stupidest country in the world. |
We have let greed take over- ruining our health, our safety, and our food. All of these temporarily embarrassed millionaires have voted us into oblivion. |
Let’s start by not sending billions to Argentina, Israel and Egypt. |
People were dying because they couldn’t get a basic physical, or dental cleaning. Others were tethered to a job because many jobs did not provide health insurance coverage. |
The ACA was designed to hopefully lead to universal healthcare, but republicans blocked it in every way. |
+1 There are so many pieces of low-hanging fruit such as those three. |
| We are also granting millions of dollars to healthcare systems all across Africa - just like we did before. The difference is that the money will now go to Trump friends to do the work. |
And preexisting conditions were not just chronic, ongoing conditions like diabetes; it was things like pregnancy that companies would use to deny you coverage altogether. |
