I wish Paul Ryan had run

Anonymous
I've always liked Paul Ryan and to be honest none of the current candidates really do anything for me let alone being popular enough to to beat Hillary. Listening to an interview with Paul Ryan tonight really made me wish he was running. He's a likable guy that everybody respects, how did we blow it by not having him run?

I don't much care for Paul Ryan but admit he'd be preferable compared to most of the current slate of candidates.

He's a charlatan just like much of the Republican field. Have you ever taken a look at his budget proposals? They don't add up in any way.

He has a tough job, but an interview for him is a walk in the park compared to a Presidential candidate's. You would probably like him less if he h to pander to every whacko constituency or face being banished to the undercard debates.

Like Ted Cruz's tax plan which would create a 1 trillion dollar shortfall in the first year alone.

I heard he's training to finish a marathon in under an hour.

What's likable about him and who is this 'everybody'?

The GOP needs to get it's act together. They've got a bunch of socio-cultural extremists on one end, and a large contingent that has been ought out by big business, warping the definition of "free market" to mean "let corporations rule themselves and us." It's a disaster.

There is no single person there at this time who can shake this party up and get them to fly straight.

It's going to have to evolve into something different than what they are. God forbid anyone in the GOP get into executive office any time soon before that happens.

None of them are fiscal conservatives.

Obama on the other hand has held the line on spending for the last several years and is actually reducing deficit spending at the fastest rate in decades.

"Tax and spend liberal" just doesn't hold water anymore.

"Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility" just doesn't hold water anymore.

I know him.

He genuinely did not want to be speaker. And while he was willing to run for VP, that scenario didn't have him running for POTUS himself until 2020, when his kids were older.

He's flawed as a policymaker. But he is also who he is. He is a bit like Kasich to me -- I wouldn't vote for him and I disagree with most of what he believes in, but I don't fear him in the Oval Office the way I fear some of the other Republican candidates. I'm not a conservative, but I believe he's a good conservative in the sense that he's at least true to his beliefs but is open minded enough to at least listen to other perspectives. And he'll deal -- just ask Patty Murray.

So I sort of agree with OP. I wouldn't vote for him, but I think he would be a good choice as the faithful opposition. If that makes sense.

+3. I came on to post this but I see you guys beat me to it. His plan falls short of identifying funding even for the deep gashes he's proposing.
