I'd like to see a referendum on spending tax money on going to Mars. I can't imagine most U.S. citizens are interested in paying more for healthcare for the sake of getting to Mars. Like sure, I'll pay higher premiums so we can send a few spaceships to Mars in a few decades. So worth it to the average citizen wanting to retire by 65.

Nonsense. If the supposed problem is an unsustainable debt, then the salaries of federal workers are not needed for the solution. The solution requires a combination including higher taxes, reduced spending on Social Security, and/or reduced spending on Mediare/Medicaid. All the other drops in the bucket are optional, so claiming that squeezing civil service salaries is “starting somewhere” is disingenuous.

I ran though the numbers a while ago so don't quote me, but it was something crazy like you could remove all the spending except DOD and social security, and still have a deficit.
