Good Sci-fi for non-sci-fi woman

Anonymous
I'm a woman who loves scifi, but I'm trying to help a guy friend who is dating a woman who isn't into scifi. We are trying to think about good "gateway" scifi to get her to love the genre. There are some shows that are great if you love scifi, but not kinda hokey if you aren't (I'm thinking of ST:TNG) So what are some shows (or movies) that a non-scifi woman would like/love?

Firefly and/or Dr. Who (new Dr. Who, not old as much). Sci-fi, but also a lot of human relationship dynamic stuff that makes you forget about space a little bit.

Firefly/Serenity?

BSG remake? (although may not be great starter because lots of people didn't like the ending)

Star Wars original trilogy?

These are exactly what I was going to suggest.

I don't agree with the Dr. Who recommendation -- way too geeky.
Maybe the original Heroes series? Very good human relationships and some hot guys. Or Falling Skies? Everybody loves Noah Wylie.

The firefly movie was a lot of fun.
Interstellar was great, so was the Martian.

In terms of shows -
Dr. Who
Orphan Black
The xfiles (they are coming back!)
I heard Eureka is good but never watched it

Also, maybe more fantasy than sci fi, but maybe:

Dark Angel
Dollhouse
Futurama
Torchwood
Farscape
Fringe

Original PP who mentioned Dr. Who. I was thinking in particular about the first 3 seasons because they focus a lot on Rose Tyler and her relationship with the 9th and 10th Doctors. I lost interest a bit after that myself, because I thought that the stories between those characters were compelling.

The problem with early Dr. Who is that the show is so campy and the props/cinematography and general production level is so cheap that people who are used to modern TV and movie production levels and who are not already hooked are turned off by the initial reaction and don't really get into it. Early Dr. Who is a treasure to those who love Dr. Who, but not so much those those who don't.

OP here--he's tried Doctor Who. He started with Peter Capaldi (she was at his house and he wanted to watch the latest episode). Then showed her a few David Tenet and Matt Smith. She likes it (probably because she likes my friend, but doesn't LOVE it).

We thought about BSG, but the first season is a little slow. If you love scifi, you will go with it. But as a non-scifi person it might be a bit much. And the ending sucked.

Dr. Who poster here. Firefly, then. You might also consider Torchwood, though that could really go either way.

I started Dr Who with Christopher Eccleston. I was HOOKED. I think a PP mentioned the Rose Tyler and they were spot-on. Everyone remember Blink? All-time fave. Anyway, if the Dr Who ship has sailed because you started with Capaldi (UGH!) definitely Firefly up to the movie.

Also not mentioned, Star Trek movie, the REBOOT. I hadn't watched Star Trek at all, vaguely knew the characters (like who doesn't know spock) and could follow along. It was a really good intro, IMO.

Finally, if you can find it, a series called Sanctuary that used to be on SciFy. SO GOOD. Lots of strong women and all genres of science fiction.
Also Torchwood (dr who spinoff). Captain Jack Harkness anyone? He's pansexual, so that's fun.
