| Honest question. How does a college coach have the time to coach ECNL in the fall? Obviously possible since JW didn’t last year. I guess colleges aren’t practiced in the evening (say 7-9) so getting to an ECNL practice is feasible? |
I would imagine the bigger issue are game conflicts. I anticipate there is a lot of helping from another coach. I raised this concern on another thread and people seemed to think that it isn’t too uncommon for a coach to do college and two teams. Granted, the landscape has changed and college soccer is now an entire year vs one season. |
| My kid played for a different club before and the coach was a college coach. His assistant coach ended up running many practices and starting games and the coach would show up later. |

My daughter had a college coach when she was a senior in high school. Coach did miss several practices and games but at that age all the girls were super dedicated so they really ran their own practices. The coach was able to help with recruiting for the handful of girls who weren’t already committed to a school.
At U16 I’d be worried about not having a coach who can be there all the time. Especially for a team that has had 3 coaches in 3 years. It takes a while for a coach to build a culture and doing it when only making 50% of events is really tough. |
| Has FVU leadership addressed the college coach concern? |
| It has been asked but not answered. |
|
NM and BL both also coach at Howard. No one is complaining about them having ECNL teams (plus GFR teams. Plus DMV teams. Plus plus plus.

| JW was a breath of fresh air. A great coach, REALLY coaches the players, knows the game, cares about each player too and I wish the players had him last year. Things would have been very different. But at least 08s ended their club experience with him. If he's your coach, be happy about it. He'll make the games and practices he can. He'll call college coaches on your behalf to help the recruiting. He knows everyone. Be happy you have him next year - and parents try not to run him off. He's the best FVU has. |
Great comparison. If you are happy with NM and ML’s availability for your team then you are at. |
That is the question. How much can he make? 90% or 50%? Big difference in player experience between the 2. |
NM, BL, BL all cover for each other and work together. JW does not have that. You’ll end up with a really bad coach or even worse, MV, covering your sessions and games when he’s not. FVU parents can keep telling themselves that this is great though. No problem. |
| This is a group of parents that willing signed up for the DB experience. They will not be deterred. Heck a coach who shows up 50% will be an improvement. |
JW was not just available 50% of the time this past year. It was pretty much most of the time as is expected of any coach. He's always around at practices and sometimes even available to other teams and coaches. He's actually filled in for other coaches when they've had conflicting team games at tournaments for example. Players across the teams/ages really like him as a coach. |
What concern? He's a great coach, very well liked and fully available. There are no issues this year; so there should be no issues next year. |
