Tragedy at Regis

Anonymous
I have a kid at Regis. The NYPost story is pretty much fabricated, according to the Zoom the school had. And according to the kids. And there were safety devices on the windows.

I know there's an instinct to ask about all the why's - maybe to give us some illusion about our own kids safety. "Well, my kid doesnt xyz so this could never happen to him." But this could happen to anyone. Life is fragile.

I'm sure details will come out later. There are always lessons to be learned.

I dont know why another poster is saying "If you had a kid at a Jesuit high school, you'd understand". I don't know what that means. People like to center themselves in these conversations in a way I find repelling.

Let's keep this family in our prayers.

That was me. I am not ‘centering myself’ - that’s obnoxious of you to say- but I do have a dc at a Jesuit school and I’ve often been surprised by the stark difference between punishments there versus my dc at non Jesuits. I am not sure if Regis operates like other Jesuits, but in addition to high academic demands, these schools often have strict personal requirements that can add significant pressure and yes, it’s important to consider them as we consider if we are putting to much pressure on teens. I’m not going to out particular schools, but other privates and publics certainly don’t have ‘JUG’. I’ve also never seen so many kids expelled as I have since my dc started at a Jesuit school.

I don’t think this is correct at all. I think people on here are trying to have important discussions about triggers and pressures we are putting on our teens. This situation is a tragedy for this family, but there’s no reason we can’t all consider if and how we can do better for other teens.

It’s just nothing to gossip about. It’s pathetic and wrong and you should just hope that one day it doesn’t happen to your family and a bunch of strangers start talking about your tragedy on this website

Seek help.

Posters are trying to help--you're not.

LOVE how on a thread about a suicide, people still throw around things like "seek help" to be condescending and rude. Or joke about a poster sounding "mentally ill" as an insult (thankfully Jeff deleted that one). Maybe consider that you, by using mental illness as an insult, are part of the problem of these poor teenagers and their untreated mental illness that leads to their deaths.

+1 People always seem shocked when suicides happen. Bringing mental illness into the light so that it can be discussed openly and other incidents like this hopefully prevented is neither pathetic nor wrong--it's an important thing to do for our kids.

This should be discussed. I don’t agree with people on here running to Jeff to try to shut it down.

JUG = detention. Don't all schools have this?

So, how did this child die? Either way a child, their student, under their watch, died at the school.

No, he did jump. Someone mentioned that the windows should have safety precautions and they did.

Discussing teen mental health can be done without knowing the struggles of this particular student.

Tell me what you think JUG is and I’ll let you know. And tell me what sort of infractions it might be for, and how many one might receive for different types of infractions.

Where does your child go to school? I’ve had dc at different types of schools and I suspect you’ve never had a dc at a Jesuit school

Sure that’s fine. So let’s discuss Regis and other high performance schools

But it WAS suicide. Why tiptoe around the fact?

Who the hell do you think you are, crying “shame?” Sit down and shut up. Your feelings and opinions are not valid.

JUG is detention that is traditionally served by some sort of clean up at the school - picking up trash, mopping floors, putting away olding chairs, etc. These days, it can be writing an essay. Usually served the day if the infraction ir the morning after if the school does morning detention.

I preferred morning detention.

Where do your kids go to school?

JUG is short for jugum. Kids have always called it Justice Under God, as a joke. My kids go to/went to regis. One got JUG once for something dumb, I don't remember. And had to make copies for a teacher after school for an hour. JUGs aren't really a big thing. I suspect your kids go to Xavier where they have to walk in a circle, or did until recently. That does seem sorta dumb, I'll give you that.
