UVA has a long way to go to claim that it’s the top public.

In the past years the school has been slipping in rankings and has fallen to the T5 public, and ranked somewhere between 24-27. Very recently the university opened the School of Data Science, which could bump up CS programs.

Do you think UVa can turn around the decline or will it keep falling lower and lower? The grad law school and business school are very highly ranked but the undergrad is not.

I think it'll keep falling lower and lower. Before you know it, no one will want to attend UVA for ANYTHING. I don't know why they are bothering to build the School of Data Science; should have spent the money demolishing some of the existing buildings since pretty soon no one will want to go there. And don't get me started on Charlottesville, what an awful place to attend college. That is why my DCs decided to say no thanks to their UVA offers of admission (honestly, I am not sure why they even bothered to apply - I refused to pay the application fees) and went to Liberty instead.

This is hilarious. Charlottesville…what a dump.

UVa campus is gorgeous and Charlottesville is charming. My kid is thrilled to be attending UVa this fall. Very popular choice at kid’s very large high school. I’m sorry your kid did not get in.

I agree it’s beautiful. Love the drive down there. But kid is choosing smaller private (7k vs 17k) ranked higher. I will miss not making those drives.

As much as I regret going there because it was weak for CS, it is a lovely campus.

My kid going for CS - in the engineering school - would you give any advice for a minor or double major for them to explore?

Ask your kid to do a minor in whatever subject they are interested in or none at all. It doesn't really matter in the short run. Don't know if it does in the long run. At my son's school (he's a junior) kids with no minors and lower GPA than him have gotten much better internships (think Stripe, Citadel, etc.). Some kids are graduating in 3 years with no minors and getting jobs with FAANGs. Those who do minors are mostly doing it because they love the subject area or have long-term plans. One kid did a minor in biology and has gotten into med school. Another did a business minor and is going to Harvard for an MBA. Another did a business minor to have access to the business clubs so he can eventually work for a trading firm. But a minor is not necessary. At the end of the day, they will all be entry level programmers who will be judged on how well they do on the leetcode tests.

OMG. I can't stand the UVA boosters, but the WM booster is getting just as bad.

Guys pay attention to Wisco, it’s in a top economic location, very populous state.

My kid just chose UVA over W&M but it was an extremely close call and they loved W&M. They decided to go for engineering/CS at UVA. I will say that W&M dedication to undergraduate teaching is undeniable. It is super impressive.

DP
well, where do kid’s interests lie?
Econ, Maths, Bio, Stats, Physics, Phil

Thanks. I was just wondering based on the comment about minoring if there was any insight based on experience.
She’ll figure it out! Maybe applied math, maybe physics.

So I guess we all agree that it is just marketing and the most realistic case is UVA will continue its decline?

Apparently you think so and in your world that's all that matters.

I wouldn’t say it will continue to decline, but it never will become the top public university in this country. Too many academic weaknesses to overcome.

Could you expand on the academic weaknesses part

Absolutely! Stop the presses! Do you hear that, all you top 5% of Virginia high school students who are applying and accepted to UVA??? STOP! Do not attend UVA bc it’s on the decline; you need to believe an anonymous poster.

I’ve told my two current Hoos that they need to withdraw immediately and not to bother finishing their finals since UVA has declined so much that no other school will accept the credit. Oy vey, why did I waste so much money???

Oddly, USNWR does not factor its own undergraduate teaching rating in its overall undergraduate rating. If you compare UVA teaching to the schools above it (Berkeley, UCLA, UNC, etc.), I doubt that it is worse in undergraduate teaching. It doesn't factor.

There's nothing scientific about the ranking. It's just how college officials feel about a school.
College presidents, provosts and admissions deans who participated in the annual U.S. News peer assessment survey were asked to nominate up to 15 schools in their Best Colleges ranking category that have strength in undergraduate teaching.

The Best Undergraduate Teaching rankings are based solely on the responses to this separate section of the 2023 peer assessment survey.
