Age/grade for computer?

How old was your child when you got them their own laptop/computer? I will probably not get a laptop and will install her desktop in a common area but I am beginning to think that my dd should have her own machine. Is 5th grade too young?

my experience is by the 6th grade, most homework required the computer.

My 4th and 6th graders needed a computer for a lot of homework last year, but they don't have their own. So far, it's working to have shared family computers (2--one desktop, one laptop).

OP here. I like this suggestion a lot. Will buy an extra "family laptop" and will allow her to use in common areas of the house while she does homework. We were beginning to get into computer wars at the end of last year.

Not before age 16. Goes for all own electronics except cellphone which they get at 14.
