FCPS- Student Information System (SIS) vs Blackboard

Anonymous
We just signed up for the SIS. I thought it was replacing Blackboard- am I incorrect? And if so, what is the difference between these two systems?

I just saw on another thread that bus schedules were available in Blackboard as of 8/31. ????

Blackboard is a site that allows students to see their day-to-day assignments and SIS allows you to view their grades in real-time as I understand it.

Teacher here--the above is correct.

per the blackboard site, as of next week, you will use the same login credentials for it as for the SIS account

"Starting September 8, 2015, you must have an active SIS Parent Account to be able to login to FCPS 24-7 Learning. The same login will be used to access both the SIS and FCPS 24-7 systems after this date."

I don't really care but as I was setting it up the only thing I could think of was "one more site to get hacked and posted on-line." Did anyone else?

I don't like blackboard! SIS is si much better. I do wonder if they will transfer the homework and school.materiaks into SIS. Wish they would! SIS let's me see my kid's home work in calendar format and wuth all the classes together unlike blackboard where you have to go into each subject tab.

Another FCPS teacher here, to the parent above who would like them to link: I teach HS and so far, students don't have access to SIS. If parents don't share the login id and password, students can't see their own grades! I wouldn't want to see blackboard disappear because it does many things that SIS does not: tiered folders, "tests", discussion boards and announcements. So, while I understand the frustration with looking at 7 different classes, I don't think you can replace it with SIS.

Ed software person here. SIS stands for student information system. It's basically the entire student file, online. Bb is an LMS and contains ephemeral information about a period of time (usually an academic year). Your student's classes and info are provisioned into Bb from the SIS. I'm not sure which K-12 SIS Fairfax uses because I work in higher ed.

Because of the different purposes of the software tools it's unlikely SIS will replace Bb because it simply doesn't have the functionality or tools necessary. The two serve different purposes.

I got the letter to set up SIS for my younger elementary age child this summer but have not received anything for my older elementary age child.

Have all of you received the set up info for all of your kids?

Calm down. Letters are supposed to be mailed on the 8th.

We received letters (one for my husband, one for me) a couple of weeks ago for our high school student.
