Where to shop?

I am trying to be a reformed former Talbots and JJill shopper - I am 41 and I realize, particularly with respect to Talbots, that the clothes are not the most youthful looking. I am wondering where to shop for cuter, not terribly expensive, clothes. I work part time but my work wardrobe is pretty ok, I'm mostly looking for some cute outfits for my days at home. I have not had much luck at H&M. Can anyone advise on places to shop - particularly in the DC downtown area.

Lord and Taylor is awesome. Not too young and trendy like Bloomingdales. ANd good deals.,,, The one in Chevy Chase has a great buyer.

Banana Republic, Ann Taylor (but lately not too great), Jcrew, and maybe mix a little Anthropologie?
