For comparison we pay $1300 a month for a secondary retiree health plan, employer chips in $250. Medicare B costs us $370 a month each. So we and employer subsidy are paying almost $3000 a month. That's what it costs for a couple. It's expensive. We figure our Social Security all goes to healthcare of one sort or another.

I'm sure plenty of taxpayers are more interested in keeping sick citizens off the street and funding NIH research for cures that funding the next exploding rocket. Bootstraps! Work hard and get more private-sector funders like any good businessman would!

Exactly. A large population made up of unhealthy, desperate people eventually becomes a threat to all who "have." I want to know the people in my community have what they need to care for themselves and their children. If not, then what? Who wants to live in fear.

Soybean farmers can figure out another crop the population needs. Or find a new job, just like others are being told to in the face of federal job cuts and AI.

I agree that no one seems to care. I’ve been a fed for 20 years and it never felt like people hated us in general and were gleeful about us losing our jobs or experiencing hardships until this year. And last time for the long shutdown, it felt like the business community was really supportive of feds in the city. The vibe is very different this go around. While there are some specials and such, during the 35 day one, there were specials everywhere, my coworkers and I met up and kept each other’s spirits up, patronized the local businesses that were trying to lure feds in, etc. Now, more than half my cws DRP’d and left the area, everyone remaining is stressed to the max. And 13 days in, there’s no urgency, nothing. It’s probably going to come down to TSA and ATCs again to get this resolved, unless they find some sort of magic pot of money to pay those folks from too.

FWIW I think the economic environment for small businesses is a lot worse this time around in large part due to the tarriffs and inflation which is why youre not seeing a lot of specials.
