| Yes indeed |
Probably, but I do think affluent kids with parents who have infinite time and are overly obsessed and deluded about having a kid play professional soccer will continue to flock to MLSN. But they might just lose a few born August through December. |
| Why would they lose Aug-Dec if they go SY? |
Nothing happens either way. Since MLSN and other leagues are completely seperate it will all come down to who is hosting the tournament since this is the only place teams fron different leagues will play each other. If a BY league is hosting the SY teams will need to play up 6 months. if a SY team is hosting BY teams will need to play up 6 months. In the end what will happen is clubs will only participate in tournaments that are grouped like the league they play in. This is just one of the reasons non MLS people are so interested in MLS changing to SY. Theres so many bad actors with their hands out looking for $$$. I wouldn't be surprised if some club owner with a big tournament is the one pushing for SY so much. They could care less what MLS does but if the decision affects their tournament attendance they'll sit on this thread all day making things up because its free. |

Why do you make fun of me? You must play for ECNL and those kids will NEVER go pro!!! MLSN is top dawg for real! If you can make it to MLSN academies it is like more than 50% chance to go pro just ask all the coaches and parents. It is a fact!!! But if the age cutoff got changed it would screw me over and be the wirst thing for our professional league. We would lose all respect there are other things too but you are too ignorant to understand No kid says, "excuse me!" Nor "top dawg for real." Bad adult attempt to impersonate a kid. And, really weird. |
Part of the issue is if MLS doesn’t conform than parents aspiring for keys to make MLSN who have a Q4 kid will need to find a way to keep their kid up as it will be very difficult to not only make MLSN, but also essentially leap frog up a year. |

Based on these responses, we need to end the government shutdown quickly. Whew.
The only card to be dropped is if MLS Next tries to double down on BY and introduce independent feeder leagues based on SY. USYS and US Club are all SY and every club's U8-U12 teams will be based on school year. Otherwise, every single team they inherit will be SY and mixed and they will lose a ton of talent to ECNL for the Q4's. Seems like an administrative nightmare and I think it is a forgone conclusion they are going SY unless they are doubling down and putting a plan together to execute it. |
This. It’s funny people think this has anything to do with tournaments. |
The tournaments that matter to clubs bottom lines are the ones they run, not league tournaments. And all clubs will have all or almost all teams SY and hosting clubs want to get as many teams as possible in their tournament s. MLSN teams generally don't go outside the ecosystem other than say pre season so if MLSN stays BY, all non MLSN only tournaments are SY. |
If MLSN stays BY they WONT play outside of their ecosystem. Also MLSN clubs will host their own BY tournaments that all the MLS clubs will attend. SY clubs will be invited to attend but they'll need to play up 6 months. See how it works? |
Clubs in MLSN have many more SY teams and the tournaments will all be SY. But correct, MLSN teams will not participate in the club run tournaments just like now where the top teams don't play in club tournaments. |
Its funny you think it doesnt. Some clubs (San Diego Surf comes to mind) make more money hosting tournaments than they do from fielding teams. If a percentage of teams no longer attended your events because they're BY and youve changed to SY thats money you're no longer going to make. I'm sure some of the MLS clubs host tournaments and are concerned that staying BY will dramatically affect attendance. Also woukd you do BY for boys and SY for girls? |
MLSN will go SY otherwise will take a hit on a number of levels if they try to standalone as BY, or they will go the way of ODP and be a niche league. But they will be diminished overall in the youth soccer space if they try to standalone. See how it works?
|
No, I think MLSN is going SY but it has to do with the feeder and entire eco system going SY. If it was about tournaments they would all be SY and MLSN teams would just play up, they don’t care about nonMLS events anyway. The tournament issue is easy to solve, it’s the rest of it that’s the problem. |
Nope. MLS Next is backed by MLS (pro soccer) which is the main appeal. Nobody else can do this. ODP is just a glorified Talent ID that anyone can and does do. US Soccer even implements their own Talent IDs which undercut ODP efforts. Completely different. But nice try. |
