Another Fan of Greenspan

I was blown away recently by Jake Greenspan and his ability to interact with kids and draw them out as well as blown away by his father's spot on evaluation of my DC. For anyone who is considering an evaluation, or more specifically, for anyone who just isn't quite sure what to do with their DC who may have autistic tendencies but you know deep down that isn't exactly the problem, this is the team to see. I felt like they really "got" my child and the techniques we are working on -- although we are at the very beginning of a long climb -- really seem to make sense to me and incorporate the whole child -- not just the motor skills or social skills separately, but the motor, social, emotional all in one. Its an amazing process.

I'd like to add my two cents. I wrote on another post about Jake and Dr. Greenspan.

My son's issues are nearly gone now except for attention deficit issues. I know that DIR/ Greenspan recommend doing floortime and activities to make permanent changes in the brain's ability to attend for longer periods of time. We have friends with children who have ADHD and their kids are medicated. Greenspan/ Jake do not advocate medicating as the first course of action. It is the absolute last course of action for them. They also say that medications do not make any permanent changes in the brain. But floortime and doing activities daily with your child do make permanent changes in the brain. So if you have a child with attention issues and are reluctant to medicate your child, I think this is the team to see also.

Be aware though, not medicating your child who has attention issues means putting in lots of time with him/her - hours a day if possible.

How long does it take to get an appointment? Can you share what you paid for your evaluation?

Did Dr. Greenspan outline the best intervention for your child? does he only focus on the Floortime Model or can he work with other therapists? I live in the NJ area.

Get the books he recommends and do the online course they offer. Thats at least enough to do floortime with your child at home. F/U can be every few months at his office in Bethesda also. NJ is only 3 hours away from his office.
