Basement or under sink water alarms - are they effective?

Yes if you are home to hear them. I have seen models for more like $100 that send an alert to a phone, but have not tried that type.

If you get one be sure to check it; they rely on being placed exactly where the water will be - and being positioned correctly. We had one on the top of our sump pump but because it was crooked it didn't alarm when the pump stopped working. Found it sitting in water; as soon as I moved it the screeching started. I'm sure there are good ones that are less sensitive, but if you have the cheap ones properly installed they should do the job

My dad had this for when he travelled a lot. It did actually call me once, but I think it was because the power was out, which could cause a sump pump to fail and the basement to flood.

Yes!! They're just as good as smoke detectors. You need to be home to hear it, but if you're home, you will investigate how to turn the sound off.
