How Do I Find a Child Therapist?

Anonymous
I would like to have my daughter meet with a therapist for social and General anxiety but I don't know where to begin. I received recommendations from two friends but their therapists are completely booked. Are there other resources I can use? If it matters, I'm in Rockville. Thanks in advance.

Are you planning to use insurance? If so, that would be a place to start. How far are you willing to travel?

Is this someone you need soon?

Call the booked guys back and ask for refererrals.

call ross center for anxiety in friendship heights. They are usually booked six weeks out but they gave me a referral to some private people in the area and we were able to get in right away and had a good experience. good luck!

In Rockville, I would call Alvord Baker. We've had great experiences there and wish we lived close enough to go there on a regular basis.

I took my child to someone who was very nice and claimed to do CBT (most effective for anxiety) but it turns out that she didn't really know how to do CBT for a child. When searching for a therapist, I would definitely ask about this and what their experience is and how they would help a child with anxiety. While the counselor was very nice and my kid liked to talk to her, in the end, it didn't really help my child at all. Wasted quite a bit of time and money as well.

Probably too late now, but your school's psychologist should have a list of local therapists who work with children.
