summer bed time

Anonymous
My son is 12 and seems to want to go to bed around 11 and wake up around 11. What do your kids do in the summer? School year we try for 9 bedtime most nights unless sports and too much homework get in the way. 10 on weekend nights (Fri and Saturday).

I agreed to this for my 13 year old. He's happy and there was no good reason to say no.

I let my 11 year old do this on the weeks he has no camp (he has a few weeks spread out throughout the summer when he is totally free). The weekend before a camp week I'll start dialing it back a little each night so that he is going to sleep at a somewhat reasonable hour the night before camp and keep him back to normal for the weeks of camp.

Totally fine in my opinion. Let them enjoy their summer by staying up and sleeping in. They have a limited number of truly free summers before the real world sets in.

Thanks for replies-- looking back, this is what I did! Just new for us, as he finally sleeps in.

Its new for me too and I keep looking at DDs room, thinking "you're sleeping the day away get up!" but I guess she needs it. For all of July though she has swim practice at 8am, so she's getting up regardless. She can nap later.
