Infertility Support and Discussion
Is there a major difference between over the counter and ones that are prescribed?
Think they are the same.
The prescription ones typically have more folic acid in them. But the over-the-counter ones have everything you need, and if you find one that doesn't make you nauseous you should stick with it. I liked the CVS generic ones.
My RE wanted me to take prescription because it had more folic acid. It worked -- I had a completely healthy twin pregnancy.
I took the prescription ones before getting pregnant, then Rainbow Light brand (whole foods) after. I supplemented with 400 mcg of Natures Brand folic acid also just in case. You can buy extra folic on your own to get the folic acide in the presciption ones.
Yes, I don't take prenatals at all - just a regular multi-vitamin and extra calcium and fish oil supplements. When I was pregnant, I added in more iron and calcium. They've upped the folic acid requirements since then, but I get so much w/ fortified cereal, whole grains and green stuff that I'm not worried about not getting enough.
CVS generic are perfect for me. I eat very well rounded also.
Also -- some of the prescription versions have stool softeners in them. The iron levels in some of the prenatals can constipate.
Some of the prescription ones also have DHA
