| DSD moved in with us. She is 17. We would like to get her a phone and a phone/data plan. Both DH and I have phones through work. Neither of us has a personal cell phone plan. We have FIOS for cable/internet/house phone. Can you help guide me where to start? |
| We got our 12 yo a plan on Republic Wireless (learned about it here on DCUM!). You have to buy a phone from them (we got the $150 smart phone which is pretty good) and the $12/mo plan which gives him unlimited calls/text (over Sprint) and free data over wifi. I believe there is a Sprint data plan as well but my 12 yo doesn't need data. We've been very pleased with the plan. HTH. |

I have a great plan with AT&T and didn't want to lose my unlimited data, call, and texting by moving to a family plan, when i decided my son needed to have a phone, so the sales person told me to go with a go phone plan.
I have my son my iPhone 5 when I upgraded to a 6 and set up the go phone plan for him. It's $40 a month for unlimited call and text, wifi, and 1.5 gb without wifi. you can pay each month or you can set it up with autopay. |

Tracfone. I've had one for 10+ years. You can get her a phone that does talk and text only....will run you about $20 for the phone and $100 for the year of service and enough units to talk and text. I'm getting ready to upgrade to a true android smart phone on tracfone....still planning to buy the one year service card with 450 units (which gets trippled for a one time fee of $20).... so I'll have 1350 in talk, text and data buckets. That is more than enough....and they roll over. Be careful with Republic....prices are good, but check out the service area limitations. Tracfone runs on verizon's network.
I've not spent more than $120/ YEAR on cell service so far |
| Tmobile does not require a contract, which we liked. They also had a great plan with unlimited text and data, 100 min talk, perfect for our teen. You had to buy it at walmart. |
| Tracfone has been good for my 12 yo. I'm considering doing it myself -- way cheaper than my AT&T plan! |
