The container says use or discard after 1 month. That seems like a short amount of time. We opened a container months ago to supplement BF and I was going to use some again to make 1 or 2 bottles but was not sure if I should use it. Any thoughts? |
You may want to call the 800 # on the formula can. If it's been months you probably need to throw it out. |

Storing Store powdered formula containers, covered, in a cool, dry place, not in the refrigerator. Use contents within one month. Once mixed, feed immediately or refrigerate in a sealed container and use within 24 hours. See the label for specific instructions. Don’t leave prepared formula at room temperature. And don’t freeze, because doing so can cause the fat to separate. |
We just asked our pediatrician this last week and she said that it's not necessary to use within 30 days. We told her we have one we opened in mid-Nov and may need to use it soon to supplement- she said it was fine. |
My husband and I have wondered the same thing. I was reticent to post your question on this board, lest I be bombarded with, "READ the can! GO to the website! WHY would you ask us when you have the instructions right in front of you!"
So thanks. ![]() Now, we buy the single packets. A tad more expensive, but they have a huge shelflife, and you use them only when you need to make a bottle. Same with the liquid containers packagaged in small amounts. It still sketches me out a bit that you can use the aforementioned products a YEAR after it was packaged. But hell. My husband was raised on the same stuff, and he is wicked smart and grew just fine. Hope this helps. |
OO here, thanks for the posts everyone. PP are you from New England, I have never heard someone use this in a sentance around here, I am originally from MA and wicked is common slang. Just ignore me if you have no idea what I am talking about ![]() |
another vote for the single serve packets - we keep a few of them in the diaper bag at all times, along with an empty bottle, in case of emergency. each enfamil packet makes 4 oz of formula. we also have a few of those ready-to-eat bottles that were sent to us by Enfamil, and I've used them a couple of times when we were out somewhere and she needed a couple ounces to tide her over. |
