What is your 14yo/rising 9th-grade son doing this summer?

We have DS signed up for three weeks of sleepaway camp, and I'm looking for some other options for him. It seems that there isn't too much out there for this age group.

We live in Silver Spring FWIW.

2 weeks (maybe 3) camp counselor
all of August sports try outs.
1-2 week vacation

That leaves 2-3 weeks in June, not sure.

Mine will be learning lawn care including keeping the machinery clean and how to properly landscape/trim hedges. After that he will learn car washing and waxing, learn to pump gas and pay at the pump. In between he will learn to fish, properly clean his personal space, decide what clothes and items he needs to replace and donate. He will also be learning basic cooking skills and how to iron his own clothes.

When summer ends and before school starts, he will learn finances starting with the money he's earned from all the jobs he's worked. The amount earned will depend on how well he learned and followed up on those never ending tasks.

Then we learn how to shop.

It sounds like you are a SAHP? What would a WOHP do with their kid for the summer?

I don't have a 14 year old...but could yours volunteer at some summer day camps? My oldest is only 8 so we aren't there yet. But I think if he's not old enough to get a job then he can probably volunteer at some day camps.

Mother's helper in France to practice her french and travel around on weekends. Last two weeks in Italy.

We will take a 1-2 week vacation with our 14 yo son, he will sit around and do nothing for a few weeks (hoping he will get bored of his phone and begin exploring new things). This is the first year we are not scheduling him with camps, activities, sports, etc. He decided to take a personal finance class over the summer for HS credit so he can take a different elective during High School.

Here are some things that I hope my 14yo/rising 9th-grade son will NOT be doing this summer: drugs, drinking, criminal activity, or having sex. Anything other than that is fine.

He is going to mill about the house. Sitter will come for younger kids from 11-3. He will watch them from 10-11 and 3-5. He will not be paid for this. He will watch too much TV and play too many video games.
