Speaking of Orlando, did/do school districts in Florida get money beyond pittances for unaccompanied minors released to sponsors? Florida got 95.8 million for the post hurricane surge from Puerto Rico. Older students had the opportunity to finish HS based on PR requirements or US. Fairfax County has received about 5000 UAM from ORR post DACA since Oct 2013. https://floridapolitics.com/archives/273811-florida-schools-getting-95-8-million-for-puerto-rico-students The post DACA ORR UAM surge produced different responses from school districts around the USA and Fairfax County - FCPS - always makes the over 50 per county release list. Note California and NY have school districts that make the lack of opportunity list. Each state supervises it's school districts so for all the CA/NY pontificating ... https://apnews.com/b7f933ef6e054c2ca8e32bd9b477e9ab Underfunding our local costs for a federal based "surge" started post DACA. 2014 from NBC CA local station https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/School-Districts-Brace-for-Unaccompanied-Minors-From-Central-America-Find-Funding-to-Pay-for-Help-271073271.html FCPS gets $175 per UAM released by ORR annually. That's an identifiable surge not from new housing or move in/move out residential real estate. Have any senators or house of reps from VA attempted to get funding? |
Seems like I recall Schultz trying to get the SB to request additional federal funding after the surge of UAM under Obama. They refused to request it. |
That is nonsensical considering Obama, a Democrat, was our President. I guess this was a partisan issue and our politicians from local to state to federal just follow the Perez party line. Meanwhile districts in NY state have the same problem. Federal law prohibits school districts from asking immigration status but ORR has specific numbers of minors released by county. FCPS budget had it at about $175 and that matches numbers in articles. If the feds can find the count for $175/student then it should up the $175 to $17,500. It appears that the DACA surge is a pass the buck to local taxpayers wherever these UAM land. ORR has the numbers and the feds should reimburse. https://www.newsday.com/opinion/columnists/lane-filler/maryellen-elia-new-york-state-education-unaccompanied-minors-funding-1.28824091 |
In a parent led activity, one of the AAP teachers (whose class I was helping with as there had been no AAP parent volunteer for that class), the teacher came up to a friend and I and gushed about how much she loves teaching AAP because they are just so much more focused on learning, better students, etc. An AAP parent recently told me that my child would be fine in the "gen ed" studies in MS because the AAP kids will bring up the school for everyone else. Those are just two examples. |
Why would anyone be offended about the choice I make? It has nothing to do with them. Or you. I know others who have also declined AAP for various reasons. I mean this sincerely: get a life. |
No, they ended up voting and did request the additional help (article here: https://wamu.org/story/14/11/12/fairfax_asks_feds_for_help_on_unaccompanied_minors/). I would be very curious to know if/ how much federal help was actually received, though. |
Pretty pathetic of the school board. People are so partisan that they can’t even ask for added money to educate kids in need simply because asking for the money is to admit that it is a burden to educate them. Well, it is. It’s not 100 percent cultural enrichment. It costs money. |
Best post in thread. So true |
You...just.. nailed...it. FCPS board, listen up!!! Your liberal policies are NOT working!!! Enforce academic standards and stop being scared. |
So what do you suggest instead re: ESL students? They are here to stay whether you like it or not. |
It was the republican george w bush who passed no child left behind - that is what tilted the scale to favor the lower performing kids - so it is the semi-literate conservatives who bear responsibility for where we are today |
And they arent talking about the free labor that built this country and its wealth from the people who were exploited. But then you want to cry about crums that some unfortunate people you let into this country are getting. |
| This treat of a thread won't die. BTW, where am I supposed to go to SOUND OFF if I don't think FCPS is in decline? Asking for a friend. |
I know where you can go |
Back to school night? PTA meetings? School activities? This thread is for the losers and malcontents to console each other. |
